Equine surgeon Dr. Patty Hogan, of the New Jersey Equine Clinic in Clarksburg, will put aside her instruments on Sept. 16 at 3 p.m. to meet with high school girls interested in a career in equine medicine.
Dr. Hogan, a 39-year-old native of New Brunswick, has operated on thousands of horses, but her most famous patients of late have been Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner Smarty Jones and Hambletonian starter Eilean Donan. As a grade-schooler, Dr. Hogan rode her bike after school and on weekends to Johnson Park Racetrack, doing chores around the barn just for a chance to be around horses.
After undergraduate school at the University of Delaware and veterinary school at the University of Pennsylvania, she spent several years training to be an equine surgeon at Texas A&M University and Rood and Riddle Clinic in Lexington.
Dr. Hogan will share how she achieved her goals with girls interested in pursuing a career as an equine veterinarian, advise girls on how to prepare for it, and give a tour of the clinic.
Dr. Hogan has also owned standardbreds for several years and is the owner of the stakes-winning 2-year-old trotting filly Shadowofyoursmile, trained by her husband, Ed Lohmeyer. There is no charge, and the U.S. Trotting Association-sponsored event is open to any high school girl considering a career as an equine veterinarian. Advance registration is required; call Ellen Harvey at (732) 780-3700 to register or e-mail her at [email protected].
