Navy Midshipman Charles T. Taverna, son of Virginia D. and Thomas A. Taverna of Howell, recently reported for duty aboard the amphibious transport dock USS Duluth, homeported in San Diego, Calif. Taverna is a 2003 graduate of Freehold Township High School.

Marine Corps Pfc. Richard K. Moran, son of Margaret M. Moran of Howell, recently graduated from the Basic Hygiene Equipment Operator Course at Marine Corps Engineer School, Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, N.C.

During the course, Moran received instruction in basic plumbing, maintenance management, military water supply, water purification and hygiene equipment, and field sanitation.

With his newly acquired skills, Moran is ready to provide maintenance at a Marine Corps base or serve with a field unit, ensuring troops have an adequate water supply and necessary hygiene equipment. Moran is a 2003 graduate of Freehold Township High School and joined the Marine Corps in August 2003.

Marine Corps Pfc. David O. Mench, son of Debbie A. and Allen T. Mench of Jackson, recently completed the Artillery Weapons Repair Course.

During the course at U.S. Army Ordnance Center, Aberdeen Proving Ground, Md., Mench learned the mechanical, electrical and hydraulic components of towed and self-propelled artillery, rocket launchers, and air-defense weapons. Mench also studied maintenance procedures, systems fundamentals, troubleshooting and repair.

Mench is a 2003 graduate of Jackson Memorial High School and joined the Marine Corps in January 2004.

Air Force Reserve Airman 1st Class Melanie R. Caruso has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.

During the six weeks of training, the airman studied the Air Force mission, organization, and military customs and courtesies; performed drill and ceremony marches, and received physical training, rifle marksmanship, field training exercises, and special training in human relations.

In addition, airmen who complete basic training earn credits toward an associate degree through the Community College of the Air Force.

Caruso is the daughter of John and Jody Gogats of Howell.

She graduated in 1993 from Howell High School and received a bachelor’s degree in 2000 from Monmouth University, West Long Branch.
