It’s early yet, but South River High School girls soccer coach Sarah Stout knows she has a challenge on her hands: make up for the loss of star Christine Mongelli, who led the Rams to the state semifinals last fall.

"Anyone who lost a Chris Mongelli would not be happy," said Stout. "But I think we’ll be all right."

The Rams do have quite a bit of returning talent. Senior Laura Kahse and her junior sister Melissa are back, both probably in the midfield. The elder sibling should help pick up some of the offensive slack.

"She has a great shot and can score from 20 yards out, and on corner kicks," said Stout, who is assisted by JV coach Chris Brasno.

Senior sweeper Tara Takac is a strong player, and junior forward Sarah Petruska has plenty of speed up front.

"I have a new goalie in Stephanie Francis, a sophomore who’s really strong and smart," said the coach. "I’m expecting big things."

Sophs Emily Applegate and Molly Gunderson give the Rams strength on defense, while another member of the strong 10th-grade class, Jeannie O’Hara, is in the midfield, along with seniors Heather Drugos and Heather Walling, both fine athletes.

The Rams’ first scrimmage is Sept. 1 against Edison.
