Grandin N. "Bud" Paddack

Mr. Paddack, Brick, died July 17 in Long Branch. He resided in Eatontown for 40 years before moving to Brick two years ago. He was a machine engineer at E.A.I. Electronic Associates Inc., West Long Branch, where he was employed for 20 years before retiring. Mr. Paddack served with the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 2179, Port Monmouth section of Middletown. He was predeceased by a son, James N. Paddack, in 1972; and a granddaughter, Kimberly Anne Dragun, in 1981. Mr. Paddack is survived by his wife of 62 years, Nora A. Macfie Paddack; two sons and one daughter-in-law, the Rev. John N. Paddack of Staten Island, N.Y., and Donald F. and Patricia Paddack of Lake Dallas, Texas; two daughters, Donna L. Paddack-Dragun of Lake Katrine, N.Y., and Debra A. Paddack-Thomas of the Wanamassa section of Ocean Township; a brother, Robert Paddack of Atlantic Highlands; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandson. A Memorial Mass was offered at St. Dorothea’s Roman Catholic Church, Eatontown. Interment was at Mount Olivet Cemetery, Middletown. The Braun Funeral Home, Eatontown, was in charge of arrangements.

Frederick William Smith

Mr. Smith, 96, of California, died Aug. 15 at Extended Care Center at Riverside, Riverside, Calif. Born in Congress, N.Y., he had lived in Port Monmouth before moving to Perris, Calif., seven years ago. Mr. Smith was employed by the state of New Jersey for 20 years before his retirement. He was predeceased by his wife of 50 years, Grace Collins Smith, in 1995; two sisters, Gladys Dellarina and Augusta Brown; and a brother, Albert Smith. Mr. Smith is survived by a son, James Smith of Long Branch; two daughters, Catherine Jackson of Riverside, Calif., and Grace Tonks of Wall; and six grandchildren. Interment was at Mount Olivet Cemetery, Middletown. The John F. Pfleger Funeral Home, Middletown, was in charge of arrangements.

Thurlow A. West

Mr. West, 77, of Tequesta, Fla., died Aug. 21. Born in Long Branch, he had lived in Short Hills for 21 years before moving to Florida. Mr. West was employed by U.S. Trust Co. of New York City for 28 years and the U.S. Trust Co. of Florida in Palm Beach for 16 years, as a commercial and personal banker, retiring in 1999 as a senior vice president. He was a graduate of Long Branch High School, where he lettered in four sports, and Franklin & Marshall College, Lancaster, Pa., where he played football and baseball. He also attended New York University Law School. Mr. West served in the U.S. Navy Air Force from 1945-47. He was a former member of the Palm Beach Rotary Club, where he served as president, and a member of the board of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Palm Beach County. He also served on the boards of the Arthritis Association of Palm Beach and the AFS Intercultural Programs, and was president of the Franklin & Marshall College Alumni Association. Mr. West is survived by two brothers, Adlen L. West of West Long Branch and E. Frank West of Eatontown. A memorial service was held at the Church of the Good Shepherd, Tequesta. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Maria E. Piccolo

Mrs. Piccolo, 85, of Middletown, and Hollywood, Fla., died Aug. 18 at King James Care Center, Middletown. She was born and raised in Manhattan, N.Y. Mrs. Piccolo was predeceased by her husband, Joseph Piccolo, in 1995. Surviving are a son, Michael Piccolo of Long Branch; a daughter and son-in-law, Marianna and George Gencarelli of Middletown; a sister, Elizabeth Carrano of Staten Island, N.Y.; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Interment was at Ocean View Cemetery, Staten Island. The John F. Pfleger Funeral Home, Middletown, was in charge of arrangements.
