Peter Staats, M.D., has received the Excellence in Pain Treatment and Research award from the Southern Pain Society. Dr. Staats is the medical director of the Advanced Pain Management Program at CentraState Medical Center, Freehold Township.

According to a press release from CentraState, the Southern Pain Society is the largest regional chapter of the American Pain Society, a multidisciplinary organization of scientists, clinicians, policy analysts, and others dedicated to advancing pain-related research, education, treatment and professional practice.

The Southern Pain Society’s board of directors selects one health professional or scientist annually to receive the Excellence in Pain Treatment and Research award, based on his or her academic, clinical and professional contributions to the medical field of pain.

Dr. Staats, who was named the medical director of the Advanced Pain Management Program at CentraState this year, has conducted significant research on pain treatment. Most recently, he co-authored an article and study on pain treatment for cancer and AIDS patients, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association in January. His book, “Pain Medicine and Management: Just the Facts” was published last month.

Dr. Staats served as the president of the Southern Pain Society from 2000 to 2002. He joined CentraState from The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, where he was the chief of the pain management division. He is board-certified by the American Board of Anesthesia and its subspecialty in pain management.

Monmouth Ocean Chapter of New Jersey Association of Women Business Owners will hold its next dinner-meeting Sept. 23 from 6-10 p.m. at the Eatontown Sheraton, Route 35 and Industrial Way, Eatontown. The theme for the meeting is “Are You Getting What You Want From Your Business?” The cost is $35 for member sand $40 for nonmembers, and reservations are due before Sept. 17. Professional and Business Singles Network will hold a Sunday event Sept. 19 at the Radisson Hotel in Princeton, Route 1 south at Ridge Road. A seminar will be held at 6:15 p.m., followed by dance instruction and then a dance social at 8:30 p.m. Admission to the seminar is $25 and includes admission to the dance social; the fee for the dance instruction is $20 and includes admission to the dance social; or, admission to the dance social only is $15. The topic of the seminar is Nicholas Boothman’s book “How to Make Someone Love You Forever in 90 Minutes or Less.”

The group will also hold an after-work social Sept. 22, 5:30-9 p.m., at the Colts Neck Inn, routes 34 and 537, Colts Neck. The cover is $10.

And, on Oct. 6, an after-work social will be held from 5:30-9 p.m. at The Cranbury Inn, 21 South Main St., Cranbury. The fee is $10.

Sadon Chiropractic and Rehabilitation Center, Marlboro, will participate in Kids Day America/International, Sept. 18, a special day dedicated to children’s health, safety and environmental awareness in the community.

From noon to 3 p.m., Sadon Chiropractic will provide information on crime prevention, child safety, and environmental issues. There will also be free fingerprinting for all children who attend, courtesy of the local police department. The local fire department plans to support the event by providing fire safety tips.

The office will perform free spinal exams and scoliosis screenings, and will distribute information on disease prevention and health promotion. There will be appearances by McGruff the Crime Dog, and the office will provide free balloons, snacks, and giveaways, along with prize drawings.

Appointments are not required for the screenings. Activities will be held in both the office and the parking lot, and the event will be held rain or shine. Sadon Chiropractic is located at 23 Kilmer Drive in Building 1.

Siperstein’s Paint and Decorating Centers, including the newly renovated local center at 338 Route 9 north in Manalapan, announced that it has joined Pittsburgh Paints in making a donation to be used for the interior renovation of the Ellis Island Ferry Building. The in-kind donation, valued at $50,000, includes paint, color analysis and technical support for the ferry building, which is undergoing exterior renovation and is scheduled for public reopening in early 2005.

Built in the 1930s, the ferry building was used as the departure point for the millions of immigrants who had successfully passed their immigration and health inspections and were awaiting ferry transportation to their new lives in America. According to the press release from Siperstein’s, the building will house an exhibition and will illustrate the history and current state of the 30 abandoned buildings on Ellis Island, and the efforts of Save Ellis Island and the National Park Service to restore the buildings.

Siperstein’s has 16 centers in New Jersey as well as four centers in Connecticut and Massachusetts.

The Chelsea at Manalapan will celebrate Assisted Living Week Sept. 12-18 with a number of events, and the public is invited to attend.

On Sept. 12, Grandparents Day will be celebrated with a family carnival, a magician, food and games. The children from Kindercare will visit on Sept. 13, Country Western Day, featuring entertainment and country cooking. Sept. 14 is National Heritage Day, with a multi-national feast and entertainment, along with games, coffees and desserts from around the world.

Manalapan Mayor Beth Ward will be the guest on Sept. 15, when visitors are invited to share their stories about families, special events and other memorable life moments. Refreshments will be served. Sept. 16 will be Citizenship Day, featuring patriotic music. The week’s events will conclude on Sept. 17, when visitors will celebrate a day of making crafts, watching movies and playing games, and residents will showcase how to make different types of dolls form their native lands.

Michael B. Mangini, a Freehold attorney, has earned the CAP (Chartered Advisor in Philanthropy) designation from the Richard D. Irwin Graduate School of The American College, Bryn Mawr, Pa. The CAP program advances charitable giving in the United States by offering graduate-level education to professionals in the nonprofit and financial services fields who regularly work with individuals and families in the development and implementation of charitable giving and philanthropic plans.

Candidates for the CAP designation must complete a minimum of three courses in philanthropic studies at the school and six hours of supervised written examinations.

Mangini is a graduate of Fordham University School of Law, New York, and is a former Army JAG (Judge Advocate General’s Corps) officer and assistant Monmouth County prosecutor. He devotes his practice to developing asset protection and transfer strategies for his clients, their families and businesses. The Western Monmouth Chamber of Commerce awarded Mangini its 2003 Circle of Excellence Award for Community Service.

A free marketing seminar will be presented by Creative Marketing Alliance, a Princeton Junction-based marketing communications company, Sept. 21 from 3:30-4:30 p.m. Reservations are required by Sept. 17. The diabetes self-management program at CentraState Medical Center, Freehold Township, has been awarded continued recognition from the American Diabetes Association. The program offers education services to the patients it serves. The ADA Education Recognition effort is a voluntary process that assures that approved education programs have met the national standards for diabetes self-management education programs. Through the support of the health care team and increased knowledge and awareness of diabetes, the patient can assume a major part of the responsibility for his or her diabetes management.
