The North Brunswick Heritage Day Committee and Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Services has announced the selection of Gloria Zastko as the recipient of the 22nd annual Heritage Day Award. The award will be presented by Councilman Bruce Chandlee and his family at the Heritage Day Festival Sept. 18 at 8 p.m. at Babbage Park, North Brunswick. Gloria Zastko, Realtors, North Brunswick, will also sponsor a booth at the event, offer complimentary horse-and-buggy rides, and U.S. flags, bandannas and pinwheels. A lifetime resident of North Brunswick, Zastko has served as a past president of the North Brunswick Woman’s Club, as well as on the Middlesex Chapter of the American Cancer Society. She began her career in real estate in the early ’70s, and was also honored by the Gallery of Homes as the top agent in the country. She, her son, Andrew, and other charter members began Gloria Zastko, Realtors in 1991.

Charschan Chiropractic and Sports Injury Associates, 490 Georges Road, North Brunswick, in conjunction with the American Chiropractic Society, is now holding the annual “Backpack Weigh-In” during the month of September. As a free service, the establishment invites the public from Middlesex and Somerset counties to have backpacks evaluated to determine if the pack if over the safe weight limits. Brunswick Chiropractic, 93 Bayard St., New Brunswick, will hold “Kids Day America ’04” Sept. 18 from noon to 3 p.m. The free event will feature fingerprinting and child photo ID cards, handouts, scoliosis screenings, pediatric dental ID exams, postural analyses, face painting, and various giveaways. The New Jersey School Public Relations Association (NJSPRA) is seeking new members. Membership is open to those who are involved with communications, publications and media relations in New Jersey public, parochial or private schools.

The association hosts four professional workshops each school year and serves as a resource for school public relations practitioners. Recent workshops have covered varied subjects including crisis communications, press relations, budgets and bond referenda, Web site design and the No Child Left Behind Act. The group also provides tip sheets on various communications subjects and has knowledgeable people on call to provide professional advice on any communications subject.

Jeffrey A. Kesper, North Brunswick, was recently selected as the head of the library development bureau at the New Jersey State Library, Trenton. The bureau works with 312 public library systems and various types of libraries statewide. Kesper will begin his new position Oct. 4. Prior to joining the bureau, he was branch manager at the Lakewood Branch of the Ocean County Library System the past two years, where he was responsible for planning, budgeting and directing the 35-member staff. Prior to that, he had library experience at Woodbridge Township before leaving the field for 10 years. During that time frame, Kesper was employed by the American Repertory Ballet, Southern Arts Federation, Atlanta, New Jersey Council of the Arts, and Middlesex County Cultural and Heritage Commission. Kesper received both his bachelor of arts degree in history, and master’s degree in library science at Rutgers University, New Brunswick.

The New Jersey Chamber of Commerce Education Foundation will host “The Sky’s the Limit: A New Perspective on Creating a Diverse Workforce” Sept. 23 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at The Hyatt Regency New Brunswick, 2 Albany St. The conference, sponsored by Pfizer, will examine practices used by corporations that support diversity in the work force and examine the effect the current minority achievement gap may have on future candidates.
