Leo Murphy

Mr. Murphy, 71, of Jackson, died Sept. 26 at home. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., he had resided in Staten Island, N.Y., for more than 30 years before moving to Jackson eight years ago. Prior to retiring, he had worked as a carpenter for the New York City Carpenters Union for 40 years. Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Kathryn and Dominick Pinto, of Jackson; four sons and daughters-in-law, James and Susan Murphy, of Matawan, Leo Jr. and Carole Murphy, of Manalapan, Terrence and Linda Murphy, of Freehold, and John and Michele Murphy, of Cliffwood Beach; three sisters, Margaret DeRoss and Eileen Dickerson, both of Florida, and Gertrude Forbes, of Arizona; and 15 grandchildren. A funeral Mass was celebrated at Holy Family Church, Lakewood, followed by interment at Old Tennent Cemetery, Tennent section of Manalapan. Freeman Manalapan-Marlboro Funeral Home, Manalapan, was in charge of arrangements. Jerome J. Rubin

Mr. Rubin, 90, of Manalapan, died Sept. 9 at CentraState Medical Center, Freehold Township. Born in New York, he had lived in Queens, N.Y., before moving to Manalapan 27 years ago. A World War II Army veteran, he was a self-employed textile salesman in New York City prior to retiring in 1979. He volunteered many hours for the Deborah Hospital Foundation and was also active in the Covered Bridge Senior Olympics, Manalapan. Surviving are his wife, Louise; a daughter and son-in-law, Gail and Nelson Sobel of Cortland, N.Y.; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. A graveside memorial service was held at Cedar Park Mausoleum, Paramus. Freeman Manalapan-Marlboro Funeral Home, Manalapan, was in charge of arrangements.

Gary Alan Berg

Mr. Berg, 36, of Marlboro, died Sept. 23 at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital, New York City. A lifelong Marlboro resident, he was the owner of Gary’s Name Brand Shoes, Marlboro, and was also a newly published author. He is survived by his parents, Carol and Stephen Berg; a sister, Ivy Tencer; and a nephew, Mathew. A funeral service was held at Bloomfield-Cooper Jewish Chapels, Manalapan, followed by interment at Mount Sinai Cemetery, Marlboro. Ralph B. Caliendo

Mr. Caliendo, 87, of Hazlet, died Sept. 24 at Bayshore Community Hospital, Holmdel. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., he had resided in Matawan and Keyport before moving to Hazlet 45 years ago. Mr. Caliendo was a machine shop foreman at Bendix Corp., Red Bank and Eatontown, where he was employed 48 years before retiring. He was a communicant of St. Benedict’s Roman Catholic Church, Holmdel, where he was an usher. He was predeceased by three brothers, Pascquale, Salvatore and Thomas Caliendo; and two sisters, Rose Granato and Theresa Della Pietro. Mr. Caliendo is survived by his wife of 57 years, Mary Sannelli Caliendo; a daughter and son-in-law, Caroline and Joseph Ricca, of Hazlet; two sons and daughters-in-law, Thomas and Debra Caliendo, Aberdeen, and Ralph and Kathleen Caliendo, Old Bridge; a brother, John Caliendo Sr., Morganville; and nine grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial was offered at St. Benedict’s Church, followed by interment at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Keyport. The Day Funeral Home, Keyport, was in charge of arrangements.

Peter P. Samuel

Mr. Samuel, 77, of Manalapan, died Sept. 20 at Raritan Bay Medical Center, Perth Amboy division. Born in Sayreville, he had resided there before moving to Manalapan 10 years ago. Prior to his 1987 retirement, he was employed by Jersey Central Power & Light Co., Sayreville, as a mechanic for 35 years. A U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, he was also a former communicant of St. Stanislaus Kostka Roman Catholic Church, Sayreville. He was predeceased by his first wife, Mary Balas Samuel, in 1980, as well as a sister, Rose Marie Blaszka, and six brothers, Joseph, Stanley, Walter, Paul, Steven and Edward Samuel. Surviving are his wife, Trudy (Moore) Samuel; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Linda Samuel, of Perth Amboy, and Deborah and Frank Peck, and Sandra and Bruce Warden, all of Sayreville; three stepchildren, Joseph McCartney, of New York City, Kathleen DeRisi and her husband, Richard, of Manalapan, and Eileen McCartney, of Old Bridge; a sister, Laura Gutkowski, of Sayreville; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held at Maliszewski Memorial Home, Sayreville, followed by a Mass at St. Stanislaus Kostka Church and burial at St. Stanislaus Kostka Cemetery, Sayreville.
