The Arc of Monmouth’s ambulatory care center, Tinton Falls, recently received a defibrillator from Amerigroup Corp., a medical HMO. The care center provides medical and mental health services to more than 800 individuals with developmental disabilities, many with serious heart conditions in addition to mental retardation, cerebral palsy and autism. The center is staffed by Drs. Catherine Schiano, Michelle Tomlinson and John Nevins.

The Stop & Shop Supermarket Co., Quincy, Mass., recently donated and delivered 1,000 turkeys to The FoodBank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties, Neptune, for distribution to families in need during the holiday season. The company’s “Turkey Express” program delivered approximately 14,000 turkeys to hunger relief organizations in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New Hampshire Connecticut, New York and New Jersey between Oct. 24 and Nov. 18. Each year, Stop & Shop donates more than $12 million in product and financial support to individual food banks in the Northeast. Local Stop & Shop Supermarkets are located in Aberdeen, Middletown and Shrewsbury.

Chiropractic Family Health Center, Hazlet, has announced Steven Loniewski, D.C., recently received a Certificate of Recognition for completing phase one training in the biomotion adjusting concept (BAC) method of treatment. Bomanite of New Jersey, Keyport, recently changed its name to Beyond Concrete. Beyond Concrete began in 1984 as the exclusive licensed contractor for Bomanite Corp. in Monmouth and Middlesex counties. The company now covers New York City, Long Island, N.Y., and eastern Pennsylvania. It offers residential installations such as driveways, pool decks, sidewalks, patios, and interior applications, as well as a line of coating and topping products. Bomanite has completed commercial installations for clients such as The Trump Organization, several Atlantic City casinos and hotels, Six Flags Great Adventure, and Madame Tussaud’s Wax Museum.

Middletown resident Michael Murray, an exclusive agent at Allstate New Jersey Insurance Co. has been awarded the Agency Hands in the Community Award for his commitment to volunteering in the community through the Central New Jersey Detachment of the U.S. Marines’ Toys for Tots Foundation. The award also includes a $500 grant from The Allstate Foundation for the Toys for Tots effort. A contingent of Allstate New Jersey agents, “Mikes’ Bikes” was begun by Murray to collect and distribute bicycles to needy Garden State children during the holidays. The other Bikes members, as well as an additional agent, were also

awarded Agency Hands in the community grants — bringing the total monetary support of the Toys for Tots drive to $3,500. Murray was nominated for the award by Luis Ponce, a market business consultant with the company. The Allstate Foundation is funded by contributions from the Allstate Insurance Co. Grants are awarded to nonprofits seeking to improve the quality of life in communities across the country.

The Middletown office of Weichert, Realtors, has announced Michelle Derring-Potts, Katherine See, Graeme Atkinson and Eva Acevedo were recognized for industry achievements during October. Derring-Potts, a member of Weichert’s Sales and Marketed Clubs, led the office in listings. She also qualified at the bronze level for membership in the New Jersey Association of Realtors 2003 Circle of Excellence Sales Club. Jason Reiser, of Keyport, and Michael Robinson, of Hazlet, recently graduated from electrical apprenticeship training program of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 164, Paramus. The program is administered jointly by Local 164 and the Bergen-Essex-Hudson Division of the National Electrical Contractors Association. Graduates must complete 184 hours of classroom training each year and 8,000 hours of on-the-job training, under the supervision of a qualified journey person associated with one of Local 164’s signatory contractors, as well as pass the final examination. The program gives apprentices the knowledge and training necessary to interpret blueprints; safely work with high voltages; and install, repair and service complex electrical equipment and controls for residential, commercial and industrial projects.

Pleasant Valley Adult Day Care, 678 N. Beers St., Holmdel, will present a free lecture, “Understanding Alzheimer’s Disease” Dec. 6 at 7 p.m. The guest speaker will be Eileen Doremus of the Greater New Jersey Chapter of Alzheimer’s Association. Brookdale Community College, Lincroft section of Middletown, will be the recipient of $150,000 in funding as part of the omnibus spending bill for fiscal year 2005, passed by Congress and expected to be signed by the president. U.S. Sens. Frank R. Lautenberg and Jon S. Corzine have announced more than $9 million in federal funding for Homeland Security and Justice programs in New Jersey. The college will use the funding for its Opportunity through Math, Science, and Technology (Optimist) program. The program provides a distance-learning program with four Abbott districts, and uses technology and a creative curriculum to enhance the academic experience of students in the districts.

Larry Gumina, Middletown, has been named as the new vice president of affordable housing at Presbyterian Homes & Services (PHS), Princeton. Prior to joining PHS, he served as executive vice president and COO at Bayshore Community Health Services, Holmdel. Gumina has more than 14 years’ management and operational experience in the health care field. His responsibilities at PHS include operation and management of its 15 affordable housing communities located throughout New Jersey, and overseeing future growth and development in the affordable housing arena. Gumina is a member of the American College of Healthcare Executives; and a New Jersey-licensed nursing home administrator. He is a trustee for several nonprofits such as the Visiting Nurse Association of Central Jersey and the Parker Family Health Center, both Red Bank, and Jersey Coast Chapter of the American Red Cross, Tinton Falls.

Gumina received his bachelor’s degree in business administration from Bryant College, Smithfield, R.I., and a master’s degree in public administration with a specialty in health care administration from Fairleigh Dickinson University, Teaneck. He and his wife, Linda, are the parents of two children.

French & Parrello Associates, Holmdel, announced that Robin A. Kemper, P.E., F.A.S.C.E., was recently elected to the American Society of Civil Engineers’ (ASCE) board of direction. SuperFoodtown, owned and operated by Food Circus Super Markets, Middletown, is providing all of the food for the annual National Childhood Hunger Day through the FoodBank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties. Food Circus Super Markets is also providing food for a bagged lunch for fourth-graders from six local schools: West Dover Elementary, Toms River; Ocean Road Elementary, Point Pleasant; West Freehold Elementary; Brielle Elementary; Green Grove Elementary, Neptune, and Vetter School, Eatontown.

The event is sponsored by the American Culinary Federation Jersey Shore Chefs Association and its philanthropic arm, the Chef and Child Foundation, and SuperFoodtown. Over the past 10 months, Food Circus has donated more than $50,000 in food donations to the FoodBank in support of this important priority of helping the hungry. The FoodBank distributes over three million pounds of food a year to over 250 feeding programs within the two counties.

The recent wine tasting sponsored by CPC Behavioral Healthcare, Middletown, raised $1,500 to benefit CPC’s programs for children. The event was held at the Rumson home of Roseann and John Paone in mid August.

The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) is searching for outstanding New Jersey small-business owners and small-business champions who will be honored during National Small Business Week in April.

According to James A. Kocsi, SBA New Jersey district director, nominations are being sought for “New Jersey’s Small Business Person of the Year” and for outstanding “SBA Small Business Champions” in the areas of minority, women, veteran, financial services, home-based business, and “Small Business Journalist of the Year.” They are also seeking candidates for “Small Business Exporter of the Year,” “Young Entrepreneur of the Year,” and an “SBA Family-Owned Business of the Year.”

Kocsi stated that they are looking to individuals, local chambers of commerce, banks, trade associations, and other community-based business organizations to submit nominations and sponsor candidates.

The SBA will join with the New Jersey State Chamber of Commerce in recognizing its Small Business Week award winners at the eighth annual New Jersey Small Business Conference scheduled to be held April 22 at the Hyatt Hotel in New Brunswick.
