RED BANK — The Borough Police Department is conducting an investigation into the events that led to an assault on a police officer at a downtown restaurant last Saturday.

At 12:25 a.m., borough police were summoned to Red, 3 Broad St., a restaurant and lounge, due to a report of a fight in progress.

The responding officers discovered a crowd of people fighting inside the bar, police said.

Other boroughs including Middletown, Little Silver, Shrewsbury, Fair Haven, Rumson, as well as the New Jersey State Police were contacted and additional officers requested.

While attempting to disperse the crowd, Patrolman Steven Adams was reportedly punched about the head by Matthew Chlebowski, 28, Colts Neck, who was then arrested for aggravated assault on a police officer and resisting arrest.

Further investigation led to Chlebowski being charged with aggravated assault to a 23-year-old Bradley Beach resident. The victim was treated at Riverview Medical Center for injuries received during the assault.

Lt. Stephen McCarthy said that Chlebowski is the only arrest made at this point, but that there is an investigation in progress.

Judge William Himelman set bail in the amount of $25,000 for Chlebowski, who police said was committed to the Monmouth County Correctional Institution, Freehold Township.
