Max Smith
Mr. Smith, 96, of Freehold, died Jan. 9 at CentraState Medical Center, Freehold Township. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., he had resided in the Bronx, N.Y., for more than 60 years before moving to Freehold. Prior to retiring 40 years ago, he was a New York City cab driver for many years. A World War II Army veteran, he received the European-African-Middle Eastern (EAME) Campaign Medal for his service within the EAME Theater. Mr. Smith was predeceased by a grandson, Steven Russin. Surviving are his wife, Jennie (Bienstock) Smith; a son and daughter-in-law, Lewis and Ellen Smith of Chicago; two daughters and sons-in-law, Gloria and Ed Russin of the Morganville section of Marlboro, and Roslyn and Mark Squire of Bloomfield Hills, Mich.; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held at Freeman Manalapan-Marlboro Funeral Home, Manalapan, with Rabbi Donald Weber officiating. Burial took place at Sharon Gardens (Kensico Cemetery), Valhalla, N.Y. Emil W. MacKenn
Mr. MacKenn, 94, of Howell, died Dec. 29 at Bartley Health Care Nursing & Rehabilitation center, Jackson. Born in Jersey City, he had lived most of his life in New Monmouth, where he was a communicant of St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church. Prior to retiring in 1976, Mr. MacKenn was a safety engineer for the Colgate-Palmolive Co., Jersey City, for 40 years and had received a bachelor’s degree from Rutgers University, New Brunswick. He was very active in Monmouth County’s Boy Scouts of America and had been the leader of Boy Scout Troop No. 88 in Port Monmouth. Surviving are his wife of 64 years, Helen K. (Komik) MacKenn; four sons and daughters-in-law, John F. and Frances MacKenn, of Falmouth, Va., Robert W. and Monica MacKenn, of Vernon, Conn., Donald A. and Janice MacKenn, of Howell, and Stephen A. and Lillian MacKenn, of Spanaway, Wash.; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. A funeral liturgy was offered at St. Mary’s Church, followed by burial at Mount Olivet Cemetery, Middletown. John F. Pfleger Funeral Home, Middletown, was in charge of arrangements.
Louise Eva Kleinhenz
Mrs. Kleinhenz, 65, of Manalapan, died Dec. 31 at CareOne at Holmdel. Born in Manhattan, N.Y., she had lived in the Bronx, N.Y., before moving to Manalapan 40 years ago. She worked in the Manalapan Township tax department for the past 23 years, and during the last seven years had also worked as the tax collector for the borough of Englishtown. She was a communicant of Our Lady of Mercy Roman Catholic Church, Englishtown, and a former member of the Yorktowne Social Club, Manalapan. Mrs. Kleinhenz was predeceased in 2000 by her husband, John. Surviving are two sons, John Kleinhenz, of Whitehall, Pa., and Paul Kleinhenz, of Manalapan; four daughters, Donna Hall, of the Morganville section of Marlboro, and Lori Korzonowski, Carolyn Witmer and Jean Smith, all of Jackson; and 12 grandchildren. A funeral liturgy was offered at Our Lady of Mercy Church, followed by interment at St. Rose of Lima Cemetery, Freehold Township. Freeman Manalapan-Marlboro Funeral Home, Manalapan, was in charge of arrangements.
Grace A. McCarty
Mrs. McCarty, 78, of Manalapan, died Jan. 13 at Raritan Bay Medical Center, Old Bridge division. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., she had lived in Marlboro for 11 years before moving to Manalapan four years ago. She was a communicant of St. Gabriel’s Roman Catholic Church, Marlboro. Surviving are her husband of 55 years, Edward McCarty; a daughter and son-in-law, Marianne and George Delgado of Manalapan; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Jack and Cecelia Klein of Brooklyn, and Bill and Mary Klein of Colts Neck; two granddaughters; and a nephew and his family. A funeral liturgy was offered at St. Gabriel’s Historic Church, Marlboro, followed by interment at St. Gabriel’s Cemetery, Marlboro.
