Assemblyman Sam Thompson (R-13) was recently honored as the New Jersey State Legislator of the Year for 2005 at the annual New Jersey State Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Legislative and Voice of Democracy banquet Feb. 5. According to the New Jersey VFW State Commander, Donnie C. Wine, Thompson was selected based on his outstanding support of veterans’ legislation and a deep concern for veterans and veterans’ families. Thompson organized a bus trip to bring 600 local World War II veterans to visit the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C. Thompson felt without such a trip, many of these veterans would never get to see the memorial that had been build to honor their heroism and sacrifice in World War II. To raise money for the trip, Thompson organized the “WWII Vets — America’s Greatest” committee, donated $4,000 to it, and raised a total of $35,000 from corporate sponsors. He and his staff also organized the trip, arranged for 12 buses, secured funding and found volunteer nurses and medical personnel for the journey. Thompson also recently worked with gubernatorial candidate Bob Schroeder to organize a dinner for members and families of Company B of the 250th Signal Battalion just prior to the company’s shipment to Iraq.
