Attorney James M. Burns, Middletown, was recently elected co-vice chairman of the board of trustees of New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT), Newark. He has served on the board since December 2003. Burns is a specialist in management labor law and a founding partner of Genova, Burns & Vernoia, Livingston. The NJIT board of trustees is the legal governing body of the university appointed by the governor and confirmed by the state senate. Burns received his juris doctorate degree at Notre Dame (Ind.) Law School, and his bachelor of arts magna cum laude at Seton Hall University, South Orange. He is a member of the board of directors of Entrepreneur Equity Corp., Upper Saddle River. His volunteer activities include general counsel to the American Liver Foundation, New York, N.Y.

Magaly Spector, Holmdel, global technical manager of quality and process improvement at Lucent Technology’s integrated network solutions business, was recently named to Hispanic Business magazine’s list of Elite Women for 2005. Members of the list are selected from hundreds of nominations and include Hispanic women in corporate America, academia, government, philanthropy, sports, entertainment and politics. Spector joined Bell Labs in 1981, one year after coming to the United States from Cuba. A member of the Lucent team that developed the industry’s first 80-wavelength dense wavelength division multiplexing system, she helped create new technologies enabling high-speed Internet, optical and wireless networking and has been granted five patents. She has also published more than 100 articles in journals and magazines. Spector is actively involved with HISPA, Lucent’s employee business partner group for Hispanic employees.

Her awards include a Professional Achievement Award from the Hispanic Engineer National Achievement Awards Corp., and the national Orgullo Hispano Award from Reader’s Digest. She was named one of most distinguished women of the new millennium by Glamour magazine, and selected by Latina Style magazine as one of 2004’s greatest Hispanic achievers. Spector received her master’s degree in electrical engineering and her doctorate in physics at Lehigh University, Bethlehem, Pa.

The 2005 Elite Women will be recoggnized at the magazine’s Woman of the Year awards gala in June 2005.

Amboy Bank, Aberdeen, has announced the appointment of five community leaders to serve on its advisory board.
