Rider University, Lawrenceville, announced the following incoming freshmen who recently received scholarships to the school:
Hilary Bogart, Lincroft section of Middletown, a student at Middletown High School South, a Provost Scholarship;
Owen Castle, Belford section of Middletown, Middletown High School North, a Dean’s Scholarship;
Janine d’Auguste, Matawan, a student at St. John Vianney High School, Holmdel, a Founder’s Scholarship; and
Allison Seiden, Matawan, a student at Matawan Regional High School, a Founder’s Scholarship.
Glenn Stroz, Middletown, a student at High Technology High School, Lincroft, recently received a grant-in-aid from the junior division of the New Jersey Academy of Science (NJAS), Piscataway. The program accepts original research science proposals from state high school students, with the highest-ranked proposals funded with monies awarded to NJAS. Stroz’s proposal was titled “The Effect of Colored LEDs on The Growth of Duckweed.” His proposal will receive an award between $60-$100 for funding of the research project. Stroz also placed first in the biology section at the NJAS junior academy of science meeting during April.
Sarah Cortese, Middletown, has been named to the dean’s list for the winter quarter at Northwestern University, Evanston, Ill.
Denise Fazio, Aberdeen, a student at Fairleigh Dickinson University, Teaneck, was recently inducted into Phi Zeta Kappa Honor Society for the spring semester. Eligible students must complete at least 60 credits toward an undergraduate degree, with a CGPR of 3.2.
Matthew John Haddad, Leonardo section of Middletown, a student at Lafayette College, Easton, Pa., was recently elected to Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society at the school. A member of the class of 2005, he is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in government and law.
Jennifer Reingle, Aberdeen, was recently named a Greek Scholar at the University of North Carolina, Wilmington. A 2002 graduate of Matawan Regional High School, she is the daughter of Pat and Bob Reingle.
Jeanine M. Walling, Aberdeen, a student at Richard Stockton College of New Jersey, Pomona, recently received a Leadership Award at the National Conference on Student Leadership. She was one of only 112 students to earn the award given to students receiving high scores on an examination of leadership skills. She is a graduate of Matawan Regional High School, Aberdeen.
Lauren Stephanie Witlin, Holmdel, was recently named to the Pi Sigma Alpha National Political Science Honor Society at Franklin & Marshall College, Lancaster, Pa. A 2001 graduate of the Marine Academy of Science and Technology, Sandy Hook, she is majoring in both Spanish and government. She is the daughter of Sharon and John Parziale, Holmdel, and Dr. Richard Witlin, New York City.
The Freehold Soil Conservation District has announced the winners of “Celebrate Conservation” 2005 poster and bumper sticker contests. First-place winners will receive a $100 U.S. savings bonds, second-place winners receive $75 bonds, and third-place winners $50 bonds from Freehold Soil Conservation District. First place entries have also been submitted to the New Jersey Association of Conservation Districts for consideration for state-level awards.
Poster contest winners were Grace Liu and Allen Lin, students at Holmdel High School, first and second place, respectively, for the grade 10-12 category. Placing second in the grade seven through nine category was Kevin Lin, Holmdel, William Satz School.

Melanie Kerekes, 12, a student at Beers Street School, Hazlet, was recently honored as Outstanding School Safety Patroller of the Year by AAA Mid-Atlantic, Hamilton. The sixth-grader was one of 22 students from New Jersey to receive the honor. Each student received a plaque and a $150 savings bond. Criteria for selection included leadership, dependability, academics, promptness and industriousness.
Jennifer K. Lin, Middletown, a senior at Middletown High School South, and Jonathan T. Ohm, Holmdel, a senior at Holmdel High School, both recently received National Merit scholarships in the amount of $2,500 each. Lin will pursue a career in medicine and research, and Ohm will pursue a career in medicine. The National Merit Scholarship Corp. awarded scholarships to 2,500 distinguished high school seniors based on academic record, contributions and leadership in school and community activities, and an essay describing interests and goals.
The Matawan Italian American Association announced that five local students will receive $1,000 scholarship awards from the association at a June 27 reception:
Ronn Jayson Avinion graduated from St. Vincent’s Learning Academy, Philippines, in April and will attend Our Lady of Fatima University, Quezon City, Philippines. He is the son of Aurora and James Marzano, current members of the Matawan Italian American Association.
Vincent James Foley, a student at Holmdel High School, will attend Brookdale Community College, Lincroft section of Middletown. He is the grandson of Vincent Siciliano, a trustee of the association.
Teresa Giammarino, a student at Maranatha Christian Academy, Hazlet, will attend Georgian Court College, Lakewood. She is the daughter of Frank Giammarino, second vice president and recording secretary of the association.
Anthony George Nappi, a student at Christian Brothers Academy, Lincroft, will attend Seton Hall University, South Orange. He is the grandson of Vincent Siciliano.
Andrew Timothy Topper, a student at Yuma High School in Arizona, will attend Arizona Western College, Yuma. He is the grandson of James Marzano.
Matthew John Stankiewicz, a senior at Matawan Regional High School, Aberdeen, was recently selected to receive a $12,000 scholarship from the ConocoPhillips Dependent Scholarship Program. He is the son of Susan and John Stankiewicz,
Rachel Lynn Dunn, a senior at St. John Vianney High School, Holmdel, was chosen as an alternate. She is the daughter of Terry Jane and Kevin Dunn,
Selection is based on academic excellence, community service and financial need. Each winner will receive a $3,000 award, renewable yearly based on scholastic achievement, for a four-year scholarship of $12,000. More than 400 students applied for scholarships.

The Center for Holocaust Studies at Brookdale Community College, Lincroft section of Middletown, has announced the 40 winners of its “Luna Kaufman Writing and Art Contest,” in which more than 500 students statewide in grades five through 12 participated. Entry categories were original writing, original artwork and performing arts. Each winner received a $50 U.S. savings bond.
Local winners of the Luna Kaufman Writing and Art Contest were: Ashley Gallo, Kevin Treney, Victoria Maglio, Travis Roberts, Eric Fosket and Stephen Roomey, Hazlet; Chris Kirkwood and Thomas Lauro, Middletown; and Nick Van Wattingen, West Keansburg section of Hazlet.
Jake Kneute and Kyle Studd, students from Monmouth County Vocational School, Lincroft section of Middletown, were recently named state winners of the 2005 Ford/AAA Student Auto Skills competition, and earned scholarships in Ford Motor Co.’s automotive student service educational training, or Ford accelerated credential training programs. The students will compete in the finals in Washington, D.C., June 27. The state competition was open to high school juniors and seniors enrolled in automotive technology courses. The contest was designed to encourage students to pursue careers in the automotive industry by learning abut high-tech equipment, the need to be well trained, and modern vehicle systems. At the nationals, Kneute and Studd will be paired off against more than 6,000 juniors and seniors in teams from 49 states in a contest comprised of a written exam and vehicle-repair exercise.
