CentraState Medical Center, Free-hold Township, announced that its radiation oncology department now offers the Varian On Board Imager to deliver image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT) to treat cancer patients.

IGRT uses three-dimensional imaging to localize a tumor each day before treatment. The integrated imaging technology improves the precision and effectiveness of IGRT by giving doctors the ability to target and track tumors more accurately. This new technology allows higher doses of radiation to be delivered safely and reduces the amount of healthy tissue affected by the radiation.

The medical center also has opened an endovascular surgery laboratory providing minimally invasive treatments for a range of noncardiac vascular conditions, in which blood vessels may be clogged, collapsed or otherwise malfunctioning. The hospital named Larry E. Shindelman, M.D., a board-certified vascular and endovascular surgeon in private practice in East Brunswick, medical director of the lab.

Dr. Shindelman is currently conducting a clinical trial involving a special stent system for treating carotid artery stenosis. The system helps open narrowed arteries and captures plaque that may be dislodged from the artery wall to prevent it from traveling through the bloodstream and possibly causing a heart attack, stroke or other health problem. He is one of only 125 physicians nationwide involved in this research. The stent system is designed by Cordis, a Johnson & Johnson company.

Its short length and large opening for patients also offer greater comfort. Freehold Radiology Group and Centra-State offer the high-tech diagnostic tool at their MRI Center, Freehold MRI Assoc-iates, on the CentraState campus. Evening and Saturday appointments are available. For more information call (732) 462-3716.
