Local golfers fare well at NJJGC’s Colts Neck event

COLTS NECK – Monroe Township’s Kevin Lee shot a two-day combined score of 150, with a 74 second day score at Colts Neck Golf Course on Wednesday and Thursday to win the Boys 12-13 Group for the fourth consecutive week on the New Jersey Junior Golf Competition’s summer tour.

Brett Markowitz of Morganville was second with a 162, and Andrew Kim of Old Tappan finished one stroke back for third.

The highlight of the second day of action was the round of 68 turned in by Colts Neck’s own John Edwards in the Boys 16-18 Group. He had shot an 86 the first day of competition. Winning the Group was Andrew Nelson of Port Republic, whose 73 and 76 rounds were one stroke better than the combined 150 score of Joe Abernethy of Ridgewood. Matt Parise, of Williamstown, shot a combined 152 for third place.

The scores from this two-day NJJGC event get reported to the Junior Golf Scoreboard for national ranking and also earned double points for NJJGC player-of-the-year ranking.

Marlboro High School’s Mike Desero had back-to-back rounds of 76 to win the Boys 14-15 Group with a 152. Patrick DiLeo of Manalapan shot rounds of 78 each day to finish second, and Kurt Scavelli of Colts Neck was third with a combined score of 158.

Crystal Lee of Mahwah shot rounds of 38 and 41 to win the Girls 12-18 Group. Peekers Winokur of Spring Lake was second with an 87 over two days.

Hannah Kim of Palisades Park also turned in another winning performance as she captured the Girls 12 and Under Group with a 92, shooting 46 each day. Taylor Totland of Tinton Falls finished second with a combined 96.

Westfield’s Sean Elliott also won for the fourth straight week in the Boys 10-11 Group, with a 74 for two days. Michael Thomas of Tenafly was second with a combined score of 92 and Cody Dazen of Shamong was third.

Charlie Padial won the Boys 8-9 Group with an 87, shooting a 41 on the second day. Pat Boyle of Holmdel was second.

More than 85 scholastic golfers competed in the NJJGC summer tour event presented by Lexus and Toyota. The next event on the NJJGC tour is scheduled for July 19 at Knob Hill Country Club in Manalapan and July 25 at The Peddie School in Hightstown.
