The New Jersey State Bar Foundation will sponsor its annual conference “Substance Abuse, Schools and the Law” Sept. 27 from 5:30-8:10 p.m. The conference is open to educators, substance awareness counselors, student assistance counselors, school administrators, attorneys, psychologists, social workers or interested residents who work with youth to prevent and/or counsel on substance abuse. A free mock trial workshop for teachers of grades K-2 will be Sept. 30 from 9:30 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. A law fair and law adventure workshop for teachers of grades three through eight will be Oct. 17 from 9 a.m. to 1:15 p.m., and high school mock trial workshop for teacher- and attorney-coaches will be Oct. 20 from 9 a.m. to 1:10 p.m. Teachers attending the free workshops will receive professional development hours. Concerned Persons for Adoption, Summit, will sponsor its 24th annual “Let’s Talk Adoption” conference Nov. 5 from 8 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. at Rutgers University, Busch campus center, Piscataway. Co-sponsors are the New Jersey Interagency Adoption Council and Rutgers University School of Social Work. The conference will feature 36 workshops on domestic and international adoption, adoptee experiences, parenting and other topics. Stop & Shop, Dayton section of South Brunswick, recently raised $6,650 as part of its “Triple Winner Game” to benefit Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, New York City. The supermarket’s stores in New York and New Jersey have raised $1 million so far. The triple winner game is a $1 scratch card promotion available to customers at checkout.

John Norcia, North Brunswick, was recently named as the grand marshal of the 23rd annual Columbus Day Parade slated for Oct. 9 at 1 p.m. beginning at Brunswick Shopping Center, North Brunswick. The announcement was made by Vito Puleio, president of the Italian American Social Club, North Brunswick. Norcia has resided in North Brunswick since 1938 and began the Norcia Corp. in 1966. He will also be honored at a dinner Oct. 7 at 6:30 p.m. at Pines Manor.
