Debi Meli, of Howell, has joined the firm of J.J. Moriarty and Associates of Toms River as the executive assistant to the president. Meli previously worked as an associate producer for MCA Broad-casting Inc. at its WWOR television station, Secaucus, and served for more then 10 years as the public relations manager for Tribune Broadcasting’s WPIX-TV, New York.

In her capacity as the public relations executive for the WB television network affiliate in New York City, Meli was responsible for securing press coverage for the station including sporting events, prime time programming, news and public affairs, as well as for the station’s “Care for Kids” campaign.

She also brings a wealth of experience in the area of coordination in community affairs in both large and small market media companies.

J.J. Moriarty and Associates is a full-service public relations, advertising and strategic planning enterprise with offices in Toms River. Yeheskel Bar-Ness, Ph.D., a professor at the New Jersey Institute of Tech-nology, Newark, was honored by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) for his contributions to the institute’s publications and for founding the journal IEEE Communications Letters, an archival journal that allows researchers to publish brief papers in a short turnaround time.

Bar-Ness, who is foundation chair of communications and signal processing at NJIT, received the IEEE Communi-cations Society Publications Exemplary Service Award during an award ceremony held recently in St. Louis, Mo.

Bar-Ness, a resident of Marlboro, is an internationally known expert in communications and signal processing. He directs the Center for Wireless Communications and Signal Processing Research at NJIT. He is a fellow and lifetime member of IEEE.

He has published more than 200 papers and has a U.S. patent on smart antennas as well as more than eight pending patents. He has been a principal investigator or co-principal investigator on research grants and contracts supported by the National Science Foundation, the New Jersey Commission on Science and Technology, the U.S. Army, the U.S. Air Force and the Naval Oceanic Center.

He is the recipient of the Kaplan Prize (1973), which is awarded annually by the government of Israel to the 10 best technical contributors.

Bar-Ness received bachelor’s and master’s degrees in electrical engineering from the Technion, Haifa, Israel, and a doctorate from Brown University, Providence, R.I. He joined NJIT in 1985 after being at the University of Pennsylvania and Drexel University, both in Philadelphia, and at AT&T Bell Labs.
