Dennis P. Martin

Mr. Martin, 67, of Freehold Township, died Jan. 25 at home. He was born in Akron, Ohio, and had resided in Freehold Township since 1968. He was an American Airlines captain until his retirement in 1998. Mr. Martin was asked to pilot Air Force One in 1968 and was a member of the Gray Eagles and the Allied Pilots Association. He was a 1960 graduate of The Ohio State University, Columbus, where he was a member of Phi Kappa Theta fraternity and completed U.S. Air Force ROTC training. An expert marksman who was also recognized as an outstanding cadet, Mr. Martin served in the U.S. Air Force for five years as a C-124 flight crew commander, and rose to the rank of captain by the time he was discharged in 1966. He was an active member of St. Robert Bellarmine Roman Catholic Church, Freehold Township; a volunteer at Open Door of Freehold, where he and his family participated in the Adopt-A-Family program; and an original member of the Woodpeckers softball and basketball teams. Mr. Martin was predeceased by a daughter, Jennifer, his parents, Patrick and Marveen Martin, and a brother, David Martin. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Kathleen Corrigan Martin; four children, Mary Beth of Brownsville, Texas, Dennis and Amy, both of Middletown, Del., and Cary of Glenview, Ill.; three brothers, Richard of Macomb, Mich., Thomas of Granville, Ohio, and Tim Martin of Pataskala, Ohio; two sisters, Patricia A. Mowrey of Columbus, Ohio, and Mary Katherine Daniels of Marysville, Ohio; seven grandchildren; 14 nieces and 18 nephews. The funeral liturgy was celebrated at St. Robert Bellarmine Church, followed by interment at St. Rose of Lima Cemetery, Freehold Township. The Higgins Memorial Home, Freehold, was in charge of arrangements.

Roberta Sandberg

Mrs. Sandberg, 69, of Manalapan, died Jan. 26 at home. Born in New York City, she had been a resident of Manalapan for the past 39 years. She was a secretary for the Manalapan-Englishtown School District for 18 years before retiring in 2004. Mrs. Sandberg was predeceased by her father, John Davidowsky; a niece, Lori Kowalenko; and a brother-in-law, Bob Upton. Surviving are her husband of 41 years, Herbert Sandberg; a son, Herbert Sandberg Jr. of Manalapan; a daughter and son-in-law, Melissa and Matt LaRocca of Manalapan; her mother, Helen Davidowsky of New York; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Joan Kowalenko of Queens, and Linda and Martin Connolly of Kent, England; a brother and sister-in-law, John and Barbara Davidowsky of Beach Lake, Pa.; a daughter-in-law, Beth Connolly of Slatington, Pa., and Beth’s parents, Martin and Carol Connolly, of Slatington; a niece; and two granddaughters. Interment was private; a memorial service is planned. The Freeman Manalapan-Marlboro Funeral Home, Manalapan, is in charge of arrangements.
