Gymnasts from the Wilton Academy of Gymnastics competed in the “Reach for the Stars Invitational” held at Schaefer’s Gymnastics on Jan. 7. In Level 4, age 6-8 action, Karlee Makely finished first on the bars (9.3), second on the beam (8.3) and floor (9.0), and fourth on the vault (9.05) en route to winning the all-around (35.65). Ashley Louro took first on the floor (9.2), second on the bars (8.7), third on the beam (8.1) and fifth on the vault (9.0), finishing second in the AA (35.00).

In Level 5 age 9 action, Shani Weiss took second on the AA (34.5) after finishing first on the floor (9.2), and second on the vault (8.8), bars (8.6) and beam (7.9).

In Level 5 age 10 action, Julie Franco won the AA (34.55), after finishing third on the beam (8.5), second on the bars (8.5), fourth on the vault (9.05) and fifth on the floor (8.5). Samantha Gormley was second in the AA (34.3) after taking first on the bars (8.6) and floor (9.2), and third on the vault (9.1). Jessica Cataldo was sixth in the AA (33.00) after finishing second on the beam (8.7), fifth on the bars (7.9) and sixth on the floor (8.4).

In Level 5 age 11 and up, Elaina Vasile was second in the all-around (35.05) after taking first on the vault (9.25), floor (9.4) and bars (8.8). The Level 5 team won the first place team award. At the Level 4 state meet, held in Washington Township on Jan. 15, Ashlusedll-around, while Karlee Makely scored a 35.27.

Howell Giants Baseball, an established traveling team in the U.S.A.B.L., is currently holding indoor tryouts for 10- and 11-year-olds at Double Play Recreation in Ocean Township at 12:30 p.m. every Sunday through Feb. 26. The New Jersey Yankees, a USABL travel baseball team for 8- and 9-year-old boys, is looking for players. The Yankees play on Sundays from April through July, so as not to interfere with Little League play. There is a $100 registration fee, but no workbond is necessary. The Yankees will be holding a tryout on Feb. 18 from 2:30-4:30 p.m. at Hit Dogs in Toms River (an indoor facility). Please call Nicole or Carmine Pellone at (908) 907-3299 to reserve a tryout.

Athletic physicals for any student who wishes to participate in spring sports at Jackson Memorial High School for the 2005-2006 school year will be available on Wednesday, Feb. 15. The schedule is set by sport and will be held at the following times:

6 p.m. — Goetz Middle School Students

6:30 p.m. — McAuliffe Middle School Students

7 p.m. — High school students

Physicals will take place in the Bernie Reider Wing of Jackson Memorial High School, 101 Don Connor Blvd. Students should enter through the main entrance of the Reider wing (formerly named the Memorial Wing). All students should bring a completed physical packet. Female students should bring gym shorts and a bathing suit. Male students should bring gym shorts.

Parents who opt to have a family physician complete their child’s physical examination should obtain the school’s paperwork for the physician to complete. The necessary forms may be picked up at the school nurse’s office or downloaded from the high school Web site at www.jacksonsd.org and selecting the high school under the directory link.
