Police beat for the week of Feb. 16

BORDENTOWN TOWNSHIP
   Police charged two men in connection with marijuana that officers discovered after a traffic stop outside a township convenience store last week.
   Shortly after 4:30 p.m. on Feb. 7, officers stopped a 1992 Olds Cutlass after watching the car make an illegal U-turn from Route 206 into the Wawa store parking lot, police said. According to police, a search of driver, Antonio Hooker, 32, of New York City found a marijuana blunt in his pocket. Also according to police, passenger Monroe Morris, 34, of East Orange was found to have 2.5 ounces of marijuana taped to his chest under several layers of clothing, plus a blunt in his left sock. Police said officers learned that Mr. Morris was wanted in Newark on $429 worth of traffic warrants.
   Mr. Hooker was charged with possession of less than 50 grams of marijuana and released. Mr. Morris was charged with possession of more than 50 grams of marijuana and possession with intent to distribute. Police said the men admitted they were heading to Delaware; police said the marijuana was likely going to be distributed there.
   The street value of the marijuana was estimated at $1,500. Mr. Morris was taken to the Burlington County Jail in lieu of $3,500 bail.
FLORENCE
   Police last week charged a Roebling man with theft after finding him asleep in a shed with a stolen cash register and other items taken from a nearby tavern that was broken into a few hours earlier.
   According to police, David Green, 27, of Roebling was charged with burglary, theft, criminal mischief and receiving stolen property hours after Foundry Street’s Downtown Tavern was broken into overnight on Feb. 6. Police said a window to the tavern was smashed and the cash was missing, along with several other unnamed items. The burglary was reported by an employee who opened the tavern later that morning.
   Police said officers found some of the items discarded in an alley near the tavern and soon found Mr. Green asleep in a nearby shed amid other items from the tavern, including the cash register. Police did not say how much money was in the cash register when it was stolen. After taking him into custody, police said, Mr. Green confessed to burglarizing Downtown Tavern. He was taken to the Burlington County Jail in lieu of $10,000 bail.
NORTH HANOVER
   Police on Feb. 4 charged an Air Force serviceman from Huntsville, Ala., with unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of an assault weapon after he allegedly fired a shotgun at a fighting crowd in order to break up the group.
   According to police, officers were sent to check out a fight (including gunfire) taking place on the 200 block of Rahilly Road shortly after midnight. Police said the group ran off as officers arrived, and learned that Jonathan Troupe, 29, had fired a shotgun at the crowd in order to break up the fight. The fight took place in front of Mr. Troupe’s house.
   Police charged Mr. Troupe at 12:34 a.m. and turned him over to McGuire Air Force Base personnel.

   Police on Feb. 3 arrested 33-year-old Wayne Gallagher of Wrightstown in connection with an outstanding criminal warrant issued by the borough.
   According to police, officers grew suspicious of Mr. Gallagher as he drove around near the Royal Motel around 9 a.m. Police said officers discovered the warrant at the stop and charged Mr. Gallagher in connection with it. He also was charged with driving with a suspended license.
   He was released after posting $114 bail.

   Police charged Kurt Smith, 47, of North Hanover in connection with an outstanding Burlington County warrant on Feb. 3.
   According to police, officers spotted Mr. Smith standing in the road outside the Virginian Motel and, after approaching him, found he had been drinking. A background check revealed Mr. Smith was wanted by the county Sheriff’s Department, police said. He was charged at 3:19 a.m. and taken to the Burlington County Jail to await extradition.
