With three new members officially sworn in to the Hillsborough Board of Education during Monday’s re-organization meeting, board members elected Ed Plaskon and Judy Haas as the board’s new president and vice president, respectively.
Board members approved changing the location of their bi-monthly meetings from Hillsborough High School to the Auten Road Intermediate School cafeteria.
Board members agreed that ARIS can hold more people than the high school’s media center, and that it will be more comfortable for the board members to sit in a U shape rather than a straight line as in the high school auditorium.
Board member Judy Haas nominated Ed Plaskon, a former board president and vice president, to take on the role as president again.
Mr. Plaskon has served on the Board of Education for 11 years and has been involved in the facilities, finance, negotiations, communications and long-range planning committees.
Ms. Haas was then nominated by board member Steve Sloan and elected vice president after serving two years on the board.
"My goals remain what they have always been: to continue to provide high quality educational opportunities for our kids while respecting the concerns of our taxpayers, and to improve our partnership with the community through better communication and outreach," Ms. Haas said.
"I am grateful for the public’s support of our budget for the last three years and for the board’s support of me as vice president, and I intend to work hard to continue to earn those votes of confidence."
Mr. Plaskon also designated heads of each board committee.
Mr. Sloan will continue to chair the Finance Committee; Wolfgang Schneider will remain head of the Curriculum Committee; Dave Kanaby will stay on as the Policy Committee chairman; Neil Hudes was reassigned to chair the Personnel Committee; newcomer David Lin will chair the Facilities Committee and newcomer Marc Rosenberg will chair the Special Projects Committee.
Steve Paget will replace Lou Possemato as chairman of the Negotiations Committee; Ms. Haas will continue chairing the Communications Committee and Mr. Sloan was re-appointed to be the township liaison.
A legislative representative, a Somerset County School Board representative and a Municipal Alliance representative have not yet been chosen.
The board approved continuing service with its present auditors, attorney, school physicians and several other firms.
The board also appointed Lisa Antunes, assistant superintendent, as the affirmative action officer for the district.
A Board of Education meeting is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. May 8 in the ARIS cafeteria.
