Rain hits NES, URC Sprints race this week

NEW EGYPT – With rain falling in the morning, and a weather forecast calling for more rain throughout the day, New Egypt Speedway management had no option but to cancel Saturday night’s scheduled racing program.

“We’ve been getting hit with some cold, rainy weather in April,” said speedway owner Rick Grosso Sr., who was also forced to cancel the track’s April 8 opener. “Let’s hope we’ll be seeing some clear skies for the rest of the season.”

Action at New Egypt Speedway returns next Saturday night, April 29, with one humdinger of a program: the very popular URC Sprint Cars will be making their first of five appearances in 2006 – and you can count on some fast and furious competition when these winged beasts hit the clay tri-oval. Also on the big five-division racing card: big-block Modifieds, Sportsman, Super Stocks and the Advantage Financial/Cradle Rock Developers Rookie Sportsman. Pleasant View Landscaping will be sponsoring the Wing Night race card.

Gates open at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, with first green at 6 p.m. Adult admission is $20, children 7-12 are $6, and kids 6 and under are free.

As announced earlier this week, an open practice for all divisions was scheduled to take place at the speedway last night ( April 26) from 6-10 p.m. Pit gate was set to open at 5:30 p.m. A flat fee of $150 per car was charged for the practice session; driver and crew were admitted free with the race car. The spectator grandstands were not open for this racers’ test-and-tune session. In case of rain on Wednesday, the open practice was scheduled to move to Thursday night. To register for the practice session, call the speedway office at (609) 758-1900.

Grand Slam Little League Night, originally scheduled for April 22, will now run in conjunction with Scout Night on Saturday, May 6.

It’ll be a big night for the little ones: All Little Leaguers and all Scouts in uniform, ages 12 and under, will be admitted free of charge for the May 6 program.

Coming up at New Egypt Speedway on Saturday, May 13, it’s the annual Mother’s Day bouquet, sponsored by Perlmutter Family ShopRite Superstores, highlighted by the track’s second annual Supermom Stocks – mothers of Super Stock drivers racing their sons’ cars in a very special match race. Of course, the mighty big-block Modifieds, Sportsman, Super Stocks, Haldeman Ford SS Sprints and Rookie Sportsman series will also be featured on May 13 – one jam-packed night of great racing competition, plus a touching Mother’s Day tribute.
