Monmouth University’s David Gaines finished in third place in the men’s 800 meters at the Northeast Conference Championships held in Emmitsburg, Md. Gaines, a junior from Colts Neck High School, stopped the watch in 1:53.50. He was also a member of the school’s 4×800 relay team that ran an 8:07.31 and finished second. Tim Swartz, Larry Schau and Bill Doherty were the other members of the team.

Monmouth’s men won the outdoor NEC track title for the third straight year.

The Monmouth women finished third behind Long Island and St. Francis (Pa). Scoring points for the Lady Hawks was Manalapan grad Melissa Isolda, who in the final competition of her career, was eighth in the pole vault (10-6).

Freehold’s Brian Grimm, a four-year letter-winner and two-year captain of the St. John Vianney boys soccer team, will continue his educational and athletic careers at Harvard University. He’ll be leaving for Harvard on Aug. 20 to prepare for the college men’s soccer season that begins on Labor Day Weekend.

During his four-year career with the Lancers, Grimm had 17 game-winning goals. He earned all-state, all-Central Jersey and all-Shore honors. He is a member of the U.S. Soccer Y-League National Team. Grimm is a member of the National Honor Society and the SJV Math team. He was a recipient of the 2005 Dwight D. Eisenhower Leadership Award from the West Point Society of New Jersey.

The Manalapan Soccer Club has announced its travel team tryouts schedule. Tryouts will be held on the Manalapan Recreation Center’s fields except where indicated.

Full side age groups (U-11-U-14) will have two separate tryouts, one for the A team and the other for the B team. If you ant to trout for the B team, you don’t have to attend the A team tryout.

It was off to Miry Run Country Club in Robbinsville for junior golfers taking part in stop No. 3 of Junior Golf America’s Spring/Summer tour. Manalapan High School freshman Patrick DiLeo finished second in the Boys 16-18 Group, losing by one stroke. He shot an 80. This follows last week’s victory at the Hanover Country Club in Wrightstown.
