Around Cranbury by Lorraine Sedor

Summer fun on the horizon

Tomorrow, Saturday, June 17, from 8:30 a.m. until noon, the Cranbury Fraternal Order of Police will host a fishing derby at Brainerd Lake, bait and tackle provided. All Cranbury residents are encouraged to join the fun.
There will be free soda and hot dogs, and lots of prizes will be awarded! This is a BYOP (bring your own pole) event, so don’t forget it — or your camera.
Members of New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife will be available to answer questions and share an informative presentation. The Cranbury First Aid and Fire Department will also be present. Any questions may be directed to the Cranbury Police department.

Please join the Cranbury Public Library staff in welcoming Jan Murphy, the new part-time youth services librarian. Jan is joining the staff just in time to take the helm of the Summer Reading Club. With nearly 25 years experience as a children’s and young adult’s librarian in Illinois public and school libraries, Jan will be a great asset here in Cranbury. During the school year, Jan will head up the high school initiative, offer homework help, create after school programs, read during preschool story hour and work with young adult readers.
Stop in the Library and say hello!

Mike Stehn, a Cranbury junior at Princeton High School, is heading up a book acquisition project for Strathmore University in Kenya. All college text books in good condition will be accepted.
Among the topics needed are: Art, business, biographies, classics, up-to-date computer books, ethics and morality, finance, foreign language, geography, history, literature, management, music, nature, poetry, politics, science, sociology, philosophy, religions, and reference books. I think that just about covers any coursework the students in Kenya might encounter.
This is a great opportunity for recent grads and other college students to clear out their bookshelves. Any questions may be directed to Mike Stehn at (609) 409-9232. You may bring your donations to him at 1 Hardley Drive, or call for a pick up. The book drive will run until end of June.

Don’t forget to stop in the Gourgaud Gallery before the end of the month to see the exhibit of works by Tamara Woronczuk’s former students. The exhibit spans 25 years of inspiring Cranbury’s students to excel in art.

Anyone who took time out from their busy weekend last week to enjoy the Rocky Brook Garden Club’s garden tour was not disappointed. The gardens spanned a variety of styles and purposes, and each was inspiring in its own way. Congratulations to Normadelle Swale, the homeowners and the Garden Club for picking a beautiful day and six beautiful properties to view!
