Sayreville Independence Day fest July 1

The Sayreville mayor and Borough Council, through the Recreation Department and in conjunction with the Recreation Advisory Board and the Cultural Arts Council, will sponsor the 2006 Sayreville Independence Day Celebration beginning at 1 p.m. on July 1 at Kennedy Park, Washington Road. Rain date is July 2.

The event will feature children activities including crafts, hula-hoop and jump-rope competition, bike-decorating, face-painting, inflatable rides (obstacle course, moonwalk and super slide) and pony rides.

Teen and adult activities will include horseshoes (two-person tams), basketball (3-on-3, horse and around-the-world), hot-dog eating at 5 p.m. on the main stage, sack races with parent-and-child teams and a “Dizzy Bat” race.

Other attractions will be a Firecracker 5K-Run (registration will take place at 8:30 a.m., race will begin at 9:30 a.m.); a Bicycle Rodeo and Safety Program at 1 p.m.; a dunk tank featuring school and borough officials; a pie-throwing booth featuring elected officials and the tax collector; Taste of the Town, in which participants may sample and purchase food from a variety of borough businesses; and “Simon Says” at 7 p.m. on the main stage. Souvenir T-shirts will be available for purchase.

The entertainment schedule is as follows:

+ 12:45-2:15 p.m., main stage – band to be announced;

+ 2:15-3:30 p.m., skate park stage – Avon Junkies;

+ 5:30-7 p.m., main stage – Band of Gold;

+ 3:30-5 p.m., main stage – Teachers Band;

+ 7:30-9 p.m., main stage – Sandy Sasso and Her Billion-Dollar Brass Band.

Fireworks are scheduled for approximately 9:15 p.m.
