Letter about benefits for officials is a real eye-opener

Many thanks to Ed Russin (News Transcript, Letters to the Editor, Aug. 9) for his informative letter alerting the residents of Marlboro and Manalapan to the egregious and costly health benefits that our part-time township officials receive for their negligible efforts.

New Jersey’s severe state and local fiscal deficits are due in part to overly generous pension and benefit costs (as well as bureaucratic incompetence and greed). Our recent state sales tax increase was needed to help compensate for New Jersey’s largesse.

As Mr. Russin has suggested, Marlboro and Manalapan residents should show our displeasure at the polls and insist that our part-time officials serve without paid health benefits.
