Hurley, Calloway among coaches at clinic

Some of the finest minds in basketball will be at Brookdale Community College on Saturday.

The college’s athletic department will be hosting the Jersey Shore Basketball Coaches’ Clinic in the Robert Collins Arena, and it will be a “who’s who” of coaching in the tristate area.

Heading the group is St. Anthony High School’s Bob Hurley, whose teams have gained national recognition by winning national championships and more NJSIAA Tournament of Champions crowns than any other school. Phil Martelli of St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia, a National and Associated Press Coach of the Year, will be there along with Monmouth University’s Dave Calloway, who has turned the Hawks into an NEC power and NCAA tournament participant.

Among the other elite coaches who will be at the clinic are: NJSIAA State Championship coach Mary Klinger of Rutgers Preparatory School; MAAC standout and newly appointed Big East coach Bobby Gonzalez of Seton Hall University; postseason regular Stephanie Gaitley of Long Island University; and WNBA mainstay Pat Coyle of the New York Liberty.

The clinic will run from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Saturday. Registration/check-in will begin at 8 a.m. Coach Hurley will kick off the day with his presentation that will start at 9 a.m. Breakfast and lunch will be provided. Preregistration fees are $75 for the first coach and $65 each for additional coaches. Late (day-of-event) registration fees are $100 for the first coach and $90 each for additional coaches.
