For the first time in East Brunswick/Spotswood Golden Bear Chargers history, the Pee Wee Small Novice cheerleading squad has brought a regional championship to the organization, placing second place at the regional competition this past weekend at Sovereign Bank Arena. Sue DeStefano, head coach for the team, has coached for this organization for a number of years, pulling this team from adversity. Days after the last qualifier the girls were informed that their routine had to be changed due to rule changes enforced by the national level. GBC reconfigured their routine based on those changes and then faced another obstacle – one of our girls broke her wrist one week prior to the regional competition. Again, this team had to change their routine. With one week left to do this, the girls reconfigured the routine again to end up placing second at the regional level, sending this team to the DisneyWorld Pop Warner Super Bowl and CheerLeading Championships.

The GBC Pee Wee Small Novice cheerleaders are Kristy Bachman, Kendall Bacskoczky, Savanah Bruno, Amanda Candella, Kaliegh Jageman, Cristina Joule, Jordan Kimball, Juliann Marfitt, Micaela McSpadden, Jacklyn Nemec, Paige Nielsen, Kelly Parks, Kelsey Scheicher, Elyse Schrier, Kristin Seely, Katie Slomko, Alexis Tompkins and Ariel Tompkins

The GBC Junior Pee Wee Squad – the youngest junior pee wee squad to go to the regional competition – performed a beautifully executed routine, placing third at the competition. Lorraine Neilsen, head coach for this squad, has also coached for GBC for a number of years. The GBC organization is very proud of the squad’s accomplishments, especially as such a young team. The talented youngsters are Brittney Benesz, Kelsi Conahan, Shay Decker, Andrea Estafanous, Jacqueline Giancola, Samantha Griggs, Zariya Jackson, Cassandra Kosty, Caitlyn Leroy, Alyssa Lillian, Angela Long, Jessica Meagher, Elizabeth Nielsen, Alexandra Warren, Shelby Wittkop and Victoria Yuhasz.

This level of success is a wonderful send-off for the GBC cheer commissioner of three years, Lynn McSpadden. She is retiring her cheer commissioner position after this year and her work and efforts as cheer commissioner and past coach over the past 10 years are greatly appreciated.
