Freedom Film Society launches film series

Red Bank – The Freedom Film Society (FFS) is introducing two new programs designed for film lovers and die-hard cinema fans.

The Freedom Film Series, produced by FFS, will bring the best in new independent films from major festivals to Red Bank.

The film series will run on the second Wednesday evening of the month, at 7:30 p.m., beginning April 11, at the Clearview Cinemas, 36 White St. in Red Bank.

In addition, FFS is introducing Film Addicts Anonymous, a monthly get-together for film and lively discussion.

The Freedom Film Series will present hard-hitting documentaries, features and rarely seen shorts, including festival showcase films, New Jersey premieres and films not otherwise available in the area.

Each monthly screening will include a speaker who will lead a discussion about the film.

The series opener, “AIDS, Inc.” by Dr. Gary Null, will be the New Jersey premiere of the film, which blows the lid off the AIDS industry and shows how greed and corruption have hampered progress in fighting the epidemic and its underlying causes. Filmmaker and health expert Null traveled to more than 30 countries over an eight-year period to interview industry critics.

The second documentary, set for screening May 9, at 7:30 p.m., is “Deliver Us From Evil,” which was nominated for Best Documentary at this year’s Academy Awards. The documentary is the story of the Rev. Oliver O’Grady, a Catholic priest and notorious pedophile charged with raping dozens of children across Northern California over the course of 20 years. An interactive session will follow the film. Admission to each film is $8 for Freedom Film Society members and $10 for nonmembers. Tickets are available online through the Web site www.rbiff.org and at the door.

On the third Wednesday of each month, members of Film Addicts Anonymous will meet at a local theatre to watch a selected movie and afterward, discuss the film. There is no cost to join; participants pay for their ticket (and popcorn).

The FFS Web site, www.rbiff.org, will provide details on future screenings. Film fans who register online will receive e-mails alerting them to upcoming films, times and locations.

The mission of the Freedom Film Society is to support the arts and art education through the presentation of alternative films and videos. FFS also produces the annual Red Bank International Film Festival.
