Kateri center planning special event May 12

Kateri Environmental Center will present The Legend of the Forest King on May 12. Gates are open from noon to 3:30 p.m. Bring the family out for a fun adventure in the forest. The program is part treasure hunt, part nature hike and plenty of imaginative fun for children ages 5-13. Organizers say it’s like stepping inside a magical video game.

With map in hand you’ll make your way through the Kateri woodlands in search of clues. Your goal is to find what you need in order to help the Forest King. Meet knights and wizards and win prizes in the mysterious adventure. The fee for this event is $8, or $6 for members of Kateri Center. Preregistration is required. Call (732) 946-9694 for tickets. Noontime Optimists

to host fishing derby

The Noontime Optimist Club of Freehold will hold its annual fishing derby for children ages 7-13 on June 3 at Turkey Swamp Park, Georgia Road, Freehold Township. Sign-in begins at 10:30 a.m.

There will be fishing competitions in various categories followed by a barbecue lunch and the awarding of prizes. Pre-registration is required either at the CentraState Health Awareness Center in the Freehold Raceway Mall (near the food court) or in front of Wal-Mart, Route 537, on May 19 and May 26 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The cost is $2 per child. Outdoor Adventure Expo

set for May 20

Discover the many wonderful outdoor recreational opportunities that abound in Monmouth County during the county park system’s Outdoor Adventure Expo. The event will take place on Sunday, May 20, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Turkey Swamp Park, Georgia Road, Freehold.

Area residents are invited to try out kayaks, canoes, paddle boats, and the park system’s 25-foot climbing wall. The expo features free lectures, demonstrations, mini clinics, and nature hikes. Visitors can also try their hand at fly fishing and tying skills while youngsters can compete in a fishing derby.

Members of local outdoor adventure clubs will be on hand to answer questions and give advice as well as representatives from companies that sell outdoor recreation equipment. Admission and parking are free. The event is rain or shine. Camping is available inside the park (fee). For more information, call the park system at (732) 842-4000. Driver’s refresher course for senior citizens

The Orchards at Bartley, Jackson, is hosting an AARP Drivers Refresher Course for seniors in the community. The two-day class will be held May 10 and 11 from 8:30 a.m. to noon at The Orchards at Bartley.

The program is a classroom-style refresher course designed to meet the needs of senior drivers over the age of 50. Participants will update their driving knowledge and skills, learn to avoid traffic violations, and prevent accidents. The class will help senior drivers become safer and more alert behind the wheel. In addition, participants who successfully complete the course are eligible to receive discounts on auto insurance.

Preregistration is required and the class size is limited to 10 students. Students will receive light refreshments, compliments of The Orchards at Bartley, during the course days. Kol Am schedules trip

to Atlantic City June 3

Congregation Kol Am of Freehold will be sponsoring a day trip on June 3 to Atlantic City’s Tropicana Casino and Resort that will feature fun in the sun on the Boardwalk, entertainment and a chance to cash in with Lady Luck. The cost of the trip, $25 per person, covers round-trip transportation via air-conditioned coach bus, a ticket to the 5 p.m. performance of “The Crooners,” and a $10 cash rebate. Solomon Schechter Day School of Greater Monmouth County, Marlboro, commemorated Yom HaShoa, Holocaust Remembrance Day, on April 16. Grade-level presentations, a speaker and a memorial candle service all took place. In addition, all students and faculty wore yellow stars that the students made, with the word Zachor – Remember! written on it.

Yom Hashoa is a day of mourning and remembrance for the entire Jewish nation, as they pay tribute to the six million Jews and others who were killed in the Nazi concentration camps of World War II.

Games, knitting sessions

Monmouth County Library Headquarters, 125 Symmes Drive, Manalapan, offers games, knitting, art exhibits, music, movies, seminars and more, free of charge to the public.

The following programs are included in the library’s schedule for the month of May:

+ Knitting Is Fun for Everyone – May 3 and 17 at 7 p.m. All are welcome. Donations of skeins of wool are gladly accepted.

+ Play Chess – May 5, 12, 19 and 26 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

+ Play Mah Jongg – May 7, 14, and 21 at 12:30 p.m.; bring your set and play.

The headquarters will be closed May 13 and 27. The headquarters as well as all branches will be closed May 28 in observance of Memorial Day.

County park system

to offer massage class

The Monmouth County Park System will offer a “Neck, Shoulders, Hands and Feet Massage” class at the Dorbrook Recreation Area Visitor Center, Route 537, Colts Neck, 3-5 p.m. May 12.

The class teaches how to massage the tense part of the neck and shoulder areas as well as hands and feet. The cost is $25 per person.
