Documentary recalls one soldier’s sacrifice

On July 22 at 7 p.m. “A Hero in Heaven” will be presented at Congre-gation Sons of Israel, Gordons Corner Road, Manalapan. This documentary about Michael Levin, whose yahrzeit (anniversary of death) is on that evening, touches many in the congregation.

Steve Litwok, the president of the congregation, will introduce the film. The Litwok family met Levin and his family in 1997 at the bar mitzvah party of mutual friends.

Levin was born and raised in Phila-delphia. He was active in United Syn-agogue Youth and traveled to Israel under the guidance of the NATIV program. In his NATIV yearbook he said, “You can’t fulfill your dreams unless you dare to risk it all.”

When Levin was 19, he made aliyah to Israel and joined a paratroop unit. Levin came home last summer. When a war broke out with Lebanon, he went back to fight. Seven days later he was killed. Levin was laid to rest at Mount Hertzl Cemetery in Israel.

The documentary “A Hero in Heaven” was produced and directed by Sally Mitlas. A donation to the Michael Levin Memorial Fund would be appreciated.
