School spirit is alive and well at Sayreville War Memorial High School.
Calling themselves the Psycho Squad, several dozen seniors are doing their part to support the Bombers football team as visibly and vocally as they can. This was evident during Friday night’s seasonopener at home against North Brunswick, when 24 members of the unofficial student organization painted letters on themselves that, as a group, spelled “Let’s go, Sayreville Bombers.” They chanted, used noisemakers and, as senior Marco Colandrea put it, went “absolutely crazy” to cheer on the team.
“We had a great turnout,” Colandrea, who heads the group, said afterward. “We had a lot of people. They were saying that they could hear us from the parking lot. My voice is completely shot.”
Their enthusiasm was rewarded, as Sayreville shut out the Raiders, 41-0.
Colandrea said the Psycho Squad is an opportunity for students not only to support their team, but to get involved in a positive and rewarding way.
“This is something that we do after school,” Colandrea said. “I am trying to make it an actual sponsored school program and have it more supervised than is now. It’s just me and my friend Brian Miskewitz [coordinating the efforts].”
Through the sale of hoodies, T-shirts and other Bombers’ attire, the Psycho Squad has raised several hundred dollars to pay for body paint and a flag for future games.
“Everyone is chipping in,” Colandrea said. “Before the game, we had a cookout behind the school with hot dogs and hamburgers.”
The group members plan to continue these efforts throughout the season.
“Here we take football very seriously, even the fans,” Colandrea said.
