CAMPAIGN FORUM: Linda Greenstein, Democrat, Assembly, 14th Legislative District

Submitted by the candidate
Since January 2000, Assemblywoman Linda Greenstein has served as a full-time legislator in the New Jersey General Assembly, representing the 14th Legislative District. She is Deputy Speaker of the General Assembly.
The Home News Tribune, in its recent endorsement of the Assemblywoman, stated: “Scant few lawmakers in Trenton have stood up so eagerly and so decisively as she has for statewide ethics reforms” and called her “one of the more thoughtful policymakers on her side of the aisle.”
The Trenton Times has said, “Ms. Greenstein has been far out in front of the Democratic caucus on political ethics, pushing for more comprehensive bans than her party has been willing to accept on the corrupt pay-to-play system…”
As an author of the Fair and Clean Elections Law, Assemblywoman Greenstein is proud to be a participant in this program that takes special interest money out of elections and puts voters first. She has been a supporter of initiatives to end dual office holding and prevent officials from pension double-dipping. She was also the prime sponsor of the two toughest anti “pay-to-play” measures to pass the legislature to date.
Greenstein also fought for a substantial reduction in property taxes and called for a state constitutional convention on property tax reform.
She authored the nation’s toughest anti-telemarketing law, expanded the scope of Megan’s Law, increased school bus safety, and sponsored many laws to protect the environment.
The assemblywoman also sponsored a bill to require hospitals to report the spread of infectious disease and pushed for more affordable prescription drugs.
As a founder and co-chair of the Legislative Smart Growth Caucus, Greenstein championed legislation providing funding for open space preservation and promoting an anti-sprawl agenda.
As chair of the Assembly Judiciary Committee and a member of the Assembly Health and Senior Services Committee, Greenstein will fight for further ethics reforms like tougher penalties for corruption offenses and a complete ban on “pay-to-play.”
Property tax reform will remain one of her top priorities, as will ensuring that all residents have access to quality health care and needed prescription drugs.
Immediately prior to her election to the Assembly, Greenstein served five years as a member of the Plainsboro Township Committee. She has also served as an elected member of the West Windsor-Plainsboro Board of Education, and was vice president of the Mercer County School Boards Association.
Assemblywoman Greenstein holds degrees from Vassar College, the Johns Hopkins University, and the Georgetown University Law Center.
A specialist in disability law, the Assemblywoman previously was a senior staff attorney at the Community Health Law Project and supervised the Public Interest Legal Clinic at Montclair State University. She was also a clinical associate professor at Seton Hall Law School, where she supervised the Disability Law Clinic. The Assemblywoman has served as a deputy state attorney general in Trenton and as an assistant district attorney in Philadelphia.
She has been a board member of Angel’s Wings—a Mercer County-based social service agency—and the Central New Jersey Council of the Boy Scouts of America. She is also a board member of the New Jersey State Council for the Humanities.
Linda and her husband Michael Greenstein, a professor at Polytechnic University, live in Plainsboro and have one adult son, Evan.
Linda is proud that The Princeton Packet, in endorsing her for re-election in 2005, called her an "outstanding"  lawmaker who has "established a reputation for independent thought and action in Trenton." She will continue to serve the public interest, not special interests.
