Evocative images at Middletown Arts Center

Aphotography exhibit by Jay Hochheiser will be featured in the main gallery of the Middletown Arts Center through Dec. 2.

"Grand Canyon" “Grand Canyon” “Looking West – A New Direction in Fine Art Photography,” includes nearly 80 images by the Middletown photographer, many of which were processed using an old and seldom used printing method known as “lith.”

Utilizing the traditional tools of darkroom tray and sink, and the lith process, Hochheiser transformed his recent photos of the American west into stunning impressionistic images with grainy tones and brown and pink hues that evoke a sense of antiquity and history.

Hochheiser has been photographing captivating images for more than 20 years but concentrated his efforts on black and white photography in 2000 when he studied darkroom technique in London. Interested in conveying the nuances of mood and emotion through shadow and light, his challenge, he says “is to capture an evocative image without artificial manipulation or subject or setting.”

His work has been featured in both the May and August 2007 issues of the fine art photography magazine, “Focus.”

"Looking West" “Looking West” Hochheiser was the First Place winner in Middletown Township’s Adult 2007 Art Show in March and took home not only a ribbon and a silver bowl, but also won the opportunity to have a solo exhibit in the gallery at the arts center, which is located at 36 Church St.

The exhibit is free and open to the public during regular hours: Monday- Wednesday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Thursday and Friday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
