Hogmanay on New Year’s Eve

Hogmanay bonfire: The Lawrence Historical Society once again invites young and old to welcome the new year at its huge, free bonfire, starting at 6 p.m. at the 1761 Brearley House, on Meadow Road, off Princeton Pike. Bag piper Graham Kronk will hail the season by the fire while the Society serves hot cocoa to guests. Later on, inside the historic house, the piper switches to his fiddle for those who feel inspired to dance a reel. The Hogmanay tradition stems from Scotland by way of fire master Joe Logan’s hometown, Savannah, Ga. The idea is that you can throw whatever was bad in the old year on the fire and burn it away. Paper and pencil will be supplied for making your list and burning it. Last minute information on weather-related decisions will be available at (609) 895-1728. Descriptions of Hogmanay, the Brearley House and driving directions are available at www.thelhs.org.
