Math contest adds up to honors for Millstone

MILLSTONE – The scores have been tallied, and 26 Millstone students will advance to the next level of the American Mathematics Competition.

The American Mathematics Competition (AMC) was administered to 587 Millstone students Nov. 13, 2007. The school district received the contest results last week, and each math class awarded certificates to their first-, second- and thirdplace winners.

Other honors went to Millstone’s top scorers in the competition. Eighth-grader Julia Dreifus, who earned first place in the school overall, received a winner’s pin as well as an Honor Roll Certificate for scoring in the top 5 percent of the 170,000 students across the country who participated in the contest.

“Her name will also be engraved on our school plaque along with last year’s winners, Brittany Reynoso and Thomas Sweeney,” Louise San Nicola, the school district’s public information officer, said.

The school also awarded second place overall to seventh-graderMichael Shelton, who also received an Honor Roll Certificate. Eighth-graders Christopher Lui and Sammy Soliman tied for third place overall in the school.

The Millstone Middle School received a School Certificate of Merit Award for its outstanding proficiency in the contest.Additionally, sixth-grader Trevor Ferrara received a Certificate of Achievement for scoring among the top sixth-graders in the country.

Dreifus, Shelton, Lui and Soliman as well as 22 other top scorers fromMillstone will advance to the next level of the AMC, which will take place Feb. 12. The other students advancing are Christopher Anselmo, Delaney Bader, Brian Bennett, Aydin Cashel, Adam Dorfman, Trevor Ferrara, Taylor Fields, Michelle Goffreda, Meredith Greenberg, Theresa Kochenash, Kaitlyn Kohlhepp, Kara Leibowitz, Daria Lukasz, Michael Milonas, Gabriella Morrone, Heather Murphy, Michael Oliu, Stefan Pappas, Jessica Parisi, Victoria Sharp, Matthey Sopher and Justin Walter.

“We congratulate all of our students on their fantastic achievements,” San Nicola said.
