On Sunday, the Raiders sent 22 first and second year wrestlers to the Middlesex Novice Tournament and came home with an outstanding six champions, one silver medalist and three bronze medalists.
First-year wrestlers Evan Dunigan and Timothy Yost brought home gold medals as did second-year wrestlers Brett Magliaro, Christopher Santa Barbara, Anthony Donnadio and Shane Murphy. Collin Purdy took home a silver medal and David Yost, Jaden Bailey and Zach Volpe earned bronze medals. Over 600 wrestlers from across the state participated in this event and each wrestler competed in at least two matches.
On Saturday morning, Hillsborough’s JV Recreation wrestling team stormed past Bound Brook’s varsity squad for its first victory of the season. Zach Volpe led off for the Raiders with an impressive first period pin followed by a thrilling 21-13 decision from first-year wrestler Steve Ostergren. Veterans Brian Musumeci, Ryan Geoghan and Michael Dooley ignited the Raiders through the middleweights with consecutive pins and Cory Gilinsky avenged a loss from last season with an impressive 8-4 decision.
Purdy followed with a pin of his own and Rhiannon Accetta closed things out for the Raiders with a fantastic 14-6 decision where she scored six single-leg takedowns.
Later Saturday afternoon, the varsity squad dismantled a tough Plainfield team 63-22 before a packed home crowd at Hillsborough High School. Matt Williams fired up the Raider bench with a hard-fought 13-9 decision followed by Anthony Donnadio’s electric first-period pin. Older brother Jack Donnadio remained unbeaten on the season with a pin of his Plainfield foe followed by consecutives pins from Nicholas Monticchio, Brandon Van Doren and Shane Murphy. Devin Boylan continued to look sharp with a pin and John Williams and heavyweight Fredo Santorelli added falls.
The varsity team travels to Bridgewater on Saturday morning and the JV Team hosts South Plainfield and Branchburg on Sunday morning at the middle school. Check out www.borowrestling.com for additional details about our program.
