Watson to throw for Crusaders

MHS quarterback sticks with first suitor

Kevin Watson had a lot of options when it came time to choose a college.
When the final decision came and Watson decided on playing football at The College of the Holy Cross, Montgomery High coach Zoran Milich felt like his three-year starter at quarterback had made the right decision.
”They throw the ball 40 to 60 times a game, which is a great style of offense for Kevin to be in,” Milich said. “They really went after Kevin and have been with him right from the start. It’s a great situation for him because the first year he’ll be behind an all-conference quarterback who he can learn from, and then he’ll hopefully be a three-year starter at the position after that. He has a chance to learn from the best.”
Watson, who is also a standout on the lacrosse field, could have elected to play either sport in college. He also had different levels of college programs to choose from, as well as the possibility of spending a year playing in prep school. In the end, he opted for Holy Cross.
”I’m looking forward to it,” said Watson, a two-time All-Packet quarterback. “It’s a great situation. They have a returning senior quarterback and he’ll be great to learn from. They were with me the whole time and that was a factor. I was thinking about prep school but that wasn’t happening. It definitely helped that they wanted me the most. They’ve been with me since my junior year.”
Holy Cross finished this past season with a 7-4 overall record and a 4-2 mark in the Patriot League. Starting quarterback Dominic Randolph, who will be a senior next year, completed 61.6 percent of his passes for 3,604 yards and was the Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year.
Watson put up similar numbers at MHS, throwing for 5,128 yards and 42 touchdowns in his three years as the Cougars starting quarterback. He also rushed for 11 touchdowns in his career.
”It’s exciting,” Watson said. “I thought I would be playing lacrosse in college. It should be a lot of fun. I’m looking forward to the chance to learn.”
Milich is glad to see his quarterback heading into a good situation at the next level.
”Their offensive line is amazing,” Milich said. “They have kids who are 6-4 and 6-5 on that line, which is great for him. It’s quality football. They’re selective of who they take and they recruit nationally. If you look at their roster, they have players from all over the country. They came hard after him from Day One.”
And because of that, the Crusaders just might have landed their quarterback of the future.
