Cigarettes stolen in store robbery

MARLBORO – Police are still investigating an armed robbery that occurred on Jan. 13 at a 7-Eleven convenience store on Route 79, about a half-mile south of Ryan Road. The thieves made off with three cartons of cigarettes.

Police records show that at about 10 p.m. a 911 call came through but the caller hung up. A few moments later another call was placed advising police of a possible theft at the store.

Twomen are suspected of pulling off the armed robbery, which according to police documents was conducted with a gun. Police records state that one carton ofNewport 100’s and two cartons of Newport King Size were taken from the store. The three cartons of cigarettes had a combined estimated value of $162.

According to a New Jersey law Internet Web site, armed robbery is considered a first-degree crime with penalties for conviction ranging from 10 to 20 years in state prison.

AK-9 unit was deployed to the scene as police officers arrived. Marlboro police requested assistance fromthe Freehold Township Police Department to check the border of the town for the suspects.

The Freehold Township border with Marlboro is about a half-mile south of the shopping center where the 7-Eleven is located.

The Monmouth and Ocean County Intelligence Bureau and the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office were notified of the crime.
