Suspect in west side assault arrested

RED BANK – A suspect has been apprehended by police in connection with the stabbing of a 21-year-old male on Jan. 25, according to the Red Bank Police Department.

Armando Cruz, 20, of River Street, has been charged with aggravated assault after he allegedly stabbed the victim across the chest and arm, according to a police department press release.

The victim, a Matawan resident, was visiting a relative’s home on Locust Avenue on Jan. 25 when the alleged incident occurred at 1:35 p.m., according to the Jan. 28 release.

The victim identified Cruz as his attacker and police later learned that Cruz came to the Locust Avenue residence over a dispute the two young men were having, according to the release.

The dispute became heated and the two men began to fight at which time the victim was allegedly cut across the chest and arm with what was believed to be a knife, according to police.

Cruz fled the scene of the incident on foot and was arrested the same day at about 3:30 p.m. at the Red Bank Municipal Court offices, according to police.

The victim was treated and released from Riverview Medical Center Jan. 25, according to police.

The weapon used in the crime has not been recovered. In addition to aggravated assault, Cruz was charged with unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon for unlawful purpose, according to police.

Cruz’s bail was set in the amount of $20,000 and he was transferred to the Monmouth County Correctional Institution, according to police.
