Scholarship established to honor wife’s memory

The Visiting Nurse Association of Central Jersey (VNACJ) has announced the establishment of the Violet A. Yurowski Nursing Scholarship to encourage and support Brookdale Community College students who desire to pursue a career in the field of nursing.

The scholarship was established by G. Edmund Yurowski, a Freehold resident, in memory of his wife, Violet, and in gratitude for the nursing care she received during her struggle with acute myeloid leukemia. The scholarship grant will be administered by VNACJ and will award two annual scholarships of $1,000 each to Brookdale Community College nursing students.

“The scholarship grant is my way of saying thank you for the excellent care and constant attention Violet received,” Yurowski said. “I saw firsthand what the compassionate care of a nurse means to a patient and their family. It gives me a very special opportunity to honor my wife, help promote a wonderful profession and support our community college.”

“This is a wonderful example of ‘paying it forward,’ ” said Eileen Toughill, VNACJ vice president of quality and compliance and a member of the scholarship committee. “Mr. Yurowski’s generosity, through this scholarship, will help ensure quality nursing care for many more patients in the future.”

To be eligible for the scholarship, applicants must be registered in the undergraduate nursing program at Brookdale Community College and demonstrate a competitive academic record. Candidates will be required to submit application materials and take part in a personal interview.

The scholarships will be awarded annually at the VNA of Central Jersey Nurses Day celebration. For details and applications, contact Eileen Toughill at (732) 747-1204 or www.vnacj.org.
