Demolition contract awarded

TINTON FALLS – The Borough Council awarded a contract for the demolition of the former borough hall building at its Feb. 19 meeting.

Star Contracting Inc. of Hillsborough, was awarded the contract with the lowest responsible bid of $42,000.

Thirty-two bids were mailed and 16 were received on Feb. 8, according to the resolution awarding the contract.

The council unanimously approved the resolution awarding the contract to Star Contracting at the meeting.

The demolition of the former borough hall, located behind the new Municipal Complex off of Tinton Road, follows a study by Dennis Kowal Architects that found the building unsuitable as a site for a new library.

The recommendation was for the borough to not use the building as a library.

However, Borough Administrator Bryan Dempsey said last year that the site, if not the building, is still viable and might possibly be a potential site for a library.

A new library is needed as the current 3,000-square-foot library can no longer accommodate the needs of the town’s growing population, according to library officials.
