Mr. Smith, a former mayor of Freehold Township, died March 16, 2008, in Chester River Hospital, Chestertown, Md. The grain and dairy farmer was born July 29, 1922, in Freehold and served the township publicly for 12 years as a committeeman and mayor. In 1964 he purchased a farm in Maryland and worked as a farmer there until retiring in the late 1990’s. Mr. Smith was predeceased by a brother, Frederick T. Smith. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Karlyn; six children, E. Jean Anthony and her husband, Bruce, of Chestertown, Md., Karl Smith of Millsboro, Del., Barbara L. Pippin and her husband, Robert, of Chestertown, Md., James E. Smith and his wife, Beth, Donald T. Smith and his wife, Kim, and John T. Smith and his wife, Jennifer, all ofWorton,Md.; a sister, Carolyn Flock, of Colts Neck; and 16 grandchildren. A memorial service will be held on Thursday at the Galena Funeral Home of Stephen L.
