Boston College’s Maggie Taverna was named Second Team Hockey EastAll- Star. It was the third time that the defenseman from Howell has been named Hockey East All-Star. This season she scored 12 points on two goals and 10 assists. She was the leading blue-line scorer for the Golden Eagles in 2007-08.

Taverna, who played in her 100th game as an Eagle during the season, has scored 49 points in her career.

Taverna participated in the 2006 and 2007 Women’s National Festival in Lake Placid, N.Y., and was named to the U.S. Women’s Under-22 Select Team both years.

Action Gymnastics, Howell, took part in the 11th annual Star Struck Invitational, where the Junior Level 4 girls finished fourth.

MelissaAstarita led theAction girls by winning the all-around competition scoring 37.500. In addition, she tied for first on the vault (9.500 and won the uneven bars (9.400). She was second on the balance beam (9.300) and tied for fifth on the floor exercise.

Teammate Tara Zeni was third in the AA (37.050). She won the floor exercise (9.650) and was third on the vault (9.450), bars (9.050) and fifth on the beam (8.900).

Ava Caruso was seventh in the AA (35.800 and Talia Hanaburgh was 10th (35.200) for the Action girls. Caruso’s best event was the bars, where she was tied for sixth (8.900),whileHanaburgh, finished in a tie for fourth (9.000) on the same apparatus.

Kylie Caputo (34.700) and Cassidy Small (34.100)were 12th and 15th in the Level 4AA.

In Level 5 competition, Selene Tiko was second in the AA for the Action team, scoring 36.250. She won the vault (9.000), tied for second on the beam (9.200), took third on the bars (9.300) and was 10th on the floor (8.750).

Madison Hughes was fourth in the AA (35.025). She was second on the bars (9.325) and tied for sixth on the beam (9.050).

Samantha Morrison was seventh in the AA (34.750). She was fifth on the bars (9.000) and beam (8.700) and seventh on the floor (9.000).

In Level 8 Juniors, Chelsea Tse won the AA, scoring 36.3875. She also won the beam (9.625) and floor (9.350) and was third on the vault (8.900). In Level 8 Seniors, Alexis Mandato was sixth in the AA (34.750). She had a third on the beam (9.100), sixth on the floor (9.150) and ninth on the vault (8.150).

Courtney Horstman, 11, who competes for the Monmouth Gymnastics Academy’s girls team, recently competed in the Metroplex Challenge in Dallas, Texas. In the 11-year-old division, she was third on the uneven bars (11.3), balance beam (11.75) and floor exercise (13.25). She scored 47.40 in the all-around.

Horstman had competed in the Regional Qualifier prior to her participation in the Metroplex Challenge. She scored 47.25 in the Optional Level AA and 32.40 in he Compulsory Level AA qualified for the U.S. Challenge in both levels.

Most recently, Hortsman finished eighth in the AA (46.85) in the Elite Level HOPES Division for 12-year-old gymnasts at the Parkettes Invitational in Allentown, Pa. She was fifth on the vault (13.25), sixth on the floor (11.5) and eighth on the bars.

A Lacrosse Clinic will be held for boys and girls in grades 2-12 on Tuesday from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.at the Manalapan Recreation Center on Route 522. Fees are $60 for residents and $70 for nonresidents.
