Nonprofit to unveil plans for Menlo Park site

The nonprofit Edison Memorial Tower Corp. will unveil conceptual plans for a new educational facility at Thomas Edison’s historic Menlo Park site, during a public meeting on April 3 at 7 p.m. in the Township Council chambers, 100 Municipal Blvd.

As part of the nonprofit’s mission of educating the public about Thomas Edison and his impact on modern research and development, the Edison Memorial Tower Corp. plans to develop a new facility that combines science, technology and history. Thomas Edison’s achievements at Menlo Park will serve as the foundation of an interactive community science/technology center.

The corporation retained a multi-disciplinary consulting team, including architects, exhibit designers, landscape architects, historians, and archaeologists. Developing a new educational facility at Menlo Park was a major goal for the corporation’s successful 2007 fundraising campaign. During that campaign, the EMTC was able to meet and exceed their goal to raise $379,000 in private funds to secure a matching grant from the U.S. Mint. In total, more than $2.5 million has been raised for the site since January 2006.

Menlo Park, located at 37 Christie St. within Edison State Park, is owned by the state of New Jersey and leased by Edison Township, and is co-managed by the township and EMTC.
