State to sponsor E.B. Arbor Day celebration

The state Department of Environmental Protection, the New Jersey Community Forestry Council and the New Jersey Tree Foundation will celebrate Arbor Day on April 25 at the Heavenly Farms Recreational Complex and Cultural Center, 470 Dunhams Corner Road, East Brunswick.

Beginning at 8 a.m. more than 200 volunteers and tree experts from across the state will participate in planting 178 large shade trees and evergreens at the park. A ceremony will follow at 11 a.m.

East Brunswick was chosen to host this year’s state celebration in order to recognize the township’s dedication to the management of care of its trees, which reached a milestone this year as it was presented a 30th-anniversary Tree City USA award, one of only a handful in the state.

During the April 25 ceremony, awards will be presented to the 30th-, 20th-, and first-year Tree City USAcommunities, the Joyce Kilmer Award recipients and the winners of the statewide student Arbor Day Calendar contest.
