Hellenic Dancers to appear May 3 in E.B.

The Hellenic Dancers of New Jersey will perform at 7 p.m. on May 3 in the auditorium at East Brunswick High School, Cranbury Road. The event is sponsored by the township of East Brunswick, Division of Recreation and the East Brunswick Arts Commission.

The dance group is made up of 40 young adults who are first-, second- or third-generation Greek-Americans dedicated to perpetuating their heritage through performances of the regional folk dances of Greece.

Under the direction of master instructor Eleni Chakalos, more that 300 dances, songs and related traditions indigenous to mainland Greece, its islands and Asia Minor have been preserved. The Hellenic Dancers’ traditional music and folk dance is representative of a cross-section of many diverse regions, past and present. Group members perform in authentic ethnic dress that represents the 20 regions from which the dances originated, including Macedonia, Thrace, the Peloponnese, Epiros, Roumeli, Crete, Cyprus, the various island groups, and Pontos, Cappadocia and Ikonion in Asia Minor.

Admission to the performance is $5 per person at the door.
