The fourth annual high school student photography competition sponsored by the Ocean Camera Club attracted 738 photographs from 326 students representing 29 high schools throughout Ocean and Monmouth counties. The judging was held April 5 at Lakewood High School.
The photographs were judged in five different categories: architecture, human interest, landscape/waterscape, photographer’s choice, and photojournalism. First-, second- and third-place ribbons were awarded in each category. This year 106 photographs were entered in the architecture category, 112 in human interest, 184 in landscape/waterscape, 275 in photographer’s choice and 61 in photojournalism. In addition to the place ribbons awarded, 240 pictures received honorable mentions.
The Earle Stevens Memorial Best of Show Award winner is chosen from among the first-place recipients. The award is named for former Ocean Camera Club salon-level photographer and President Earle Stevens, who passed away unexpectedly in the summer of 2006. Earle was instrumental in the creation and development of the high school student photography competition. The 2008 Earle Stevens Memorial Award winner is Monmouth Regional High School student Corinne Olson for “It’s the Real Thing,” an entry in the photographer’s choice category.
