The Stony Brook-Millstone Watershed Association (SB-MWA) has offered Pennington Borough a program of assistance in developing goals and local ordinances that the association says would protect the environment and historic character of the borough.
The program is called “The Next Step,” and it was summarized at Monday night’s council meeting by SB-MWA environmental planner Susan Charles. Ms. Charles and other SB-MWA staff have been conferring with borough Councilwoman Eileen Heinzel and Planning Board members William Reuter and Jeanne Donlon.
Ms. Charles said the association recommends that Pennington be as proactive as possible in preserving open space and stream corridors, protecting the wellheads of its municipal water system, improving storm water management practices and working with other government agencies to create regional traffic plans that would reduce pollution.
The association also believes the borough should adopt a historic district ordinance for the downtown area.
OTHER MATTERS handled during Monday’s meeting were:
   — Kristen Huggins and Francie McManimon were appointed to the Pennington Parks & Recreation Commission. Both appointments are to complete unexpired terms that end Dec. 31, 2008.
   — Carey Compton was appointed to the Shade Tree Commission, to complete an unexpired term that ends Dec. 31, 2010.
   — Accepted were the resignations of Harry Compton from the Shade Tree Commission and Beverly Tucker from the Economic Development Commission.
