Extreme heat forces early school closings

On both Monday and Tuesday, school stayed in session long enough for the day to count as a school day under state regulations

The intense heat wave in the region forced the early closing of Valley public schools Monday and Tuesday.
The early dismissals were caused by “excessive heat and failed air conditioning systems in some of our facilities,” Superintendent Judith Ferguson said.
On both Monday and Tuesday, school stayed in session long enough for the day to count as a school day under state regulations.
Students were dismissed according to the emergency schedule, except that slight delays were experienced Monday in bus schedules.
Although Stony Brook Elementary, the newest of the district’s four elementary schools, is air conditioned, it also was closed early, due to the logistics of the school district’s transportation system.
Air-conditioned offices remained open as usual.
